Reviews for BOLT 7026128 Hood Lock for 07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK
I really like that the lock uses the vehicle's key. I've read some complaints regarding the "slop" in the lock, but the lock bar aligns perfectly with the frame where the hood latch would catch. This lock can be easily defeated with a coat hanger catching the hood release (I've done it), but it does make gaining access under the hood much less convenient. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase.
There is no room for error when you initially key this to your key. My key is slightly worn, and I keyed it as instructed but then it would not work. Thankfully, Quadratec sent me a replacement. I then went to a locksmith and had them make me a brand new key to use to get it keyed. Has worked well after that and provides much needed security to your hood.
The only downside was I couldn't get a rivet gun to set the larger rivets and had to use screws I had around the shop. Otherwise it's a great purchase and I don't worry as much about someone popping the hood and walking off with my battery.
4.5 Stars > NOTE: Before you start this project you are going to need a Heavy Duty Rivet Gun, which can handle a 1/4” Stainless Steel Rivet. In our area there’s a discount tool store called “Harbor Freight Tools”, they sale a Heavy Duty Rivet Gun for $19.99+tax. Once you have your Rivet Gun, the unit is very easy to install, just follow the instructions which comes with the unit, or YouTube Jeep Bolt Lock Install. There are several guys installing these online. This lock is almost prefect...Theres one small issue though once installed, but it’s not a bad issue, unless you are expecting no moment of the hood at all once locked. If you expecting No Movement all at, then you may be disappointed. After being installed and the lock is engaged, the hood has about 1/4”- 3/8” movement up and down. I believe this movement can be tightened up by bending the moving lock mechanism Inside the unit downward slightly, if you want a tighter fit. I left mine as It is for now, however I may attempt to tighten it later. ATTENTION: (DON’T DO THIS, IT WILL PROBABLY VOID YOUR WARRANTY!) If however I decide to tighten up the movement then I will do as follows. I’ll raise the hood up of course, then engage the lock and remove the key, then using a heavy duty screw driver, I will put pressure on the moving mechanism inside the lock using my screw driver to accomplish this, bending the mechanism downward “ever so slightly“ until I get the fit I’m looking for. This may take a few times each time trying not over doing it. If you attempt this, be careful you may break or damage the lock. I believe the lock works fine as is, and it looks very nice too.
The only issue I had with this is that the pop rivets supplied are huge. They are larger than 3/16 and the pop rivet tool I have won't work. I can't even find a pop rivet tool that will install them so I ended up using self tapping bolts.
Easy installation. I just had to buy a rivet gun for the 4 rivets. One great side effect is no more hood flutter at high speeds.
Hood lock works very well and as advertised. Bolt should provide a stainless steel bolt on option instead of the 1/4 inch rivets which requires you to purchase a rivet tool that can handle 1/4 inch rivets for installation.
Works well, easy to install
It works, but the cover fell off early on.
I would have given it 5 stars, but mine came out defective, the irony is that the defect works in my favor. I installed it exactly how the instructions said, after coding the key you are NOT! to mess with the unit & key until after the installation, so after the install, I couldn't get the key to open the lock. After messing with it for 15 minutes, I found out that if you press on the hood a certain way and move the key a certain way, it opens easily. So if a thief has access to my keys, he or she still can't open my hood! LOL!
