Whether your preferred way to travel is over pavement, something other than a paved road, or a mix of both — upgrading your Jeep's wheels does way more than just help you stand out. New, lighter alloy wheels enhance fuel economy, provide extra durability in difficult situations, allow you to mount larger tires, and some even offer a beadlock option for better off-road performance.

But choosing the perfect wheel for you is the trick, right? And how do you know the style you like will fit on your vehicle? Or perform the way you want? Well, these days most wheels come in alloy or steel. Steel is heavier, more durable, and is generally the choice for hardcore off-road enthusiasts. Alloy rims are lighter and can provide the offset and backspacing that play well with suspension lift kits and larger tires.

If you are looking to swap your Jeep wheels to fit larger tires, know that most stock rims in the current JL Wrangler series are 17-inch, but older Jeeps could have 15, 16, or 18-inch wheels depending on the tires. A quick look at the current tire size will tell you what size rims you currently possess. And you don't need a larger wheel if you choose larger tires. What is important is the wheel's backspacing and offset. Generally speaking, the lower those numbers, the further out the rim will mount, which helps if your vehicle plans include a lift kit and a lot of off-road activity. Also, make sure to choose the correct bolt pattern to ensure the proper fit on your Jeep. If you have a newer JK, JL or JT model, look for a wheel with a 5x5 bolt pattern. Older TJ and YJs utilize a 5x4.5 pattern.
