Reviews for Quadratec 12500 0212 Aluminum Modular Engine and Transmission Skid Plate for 07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK
Good product. I like these skids. They have worked well so far and held up nicely. quick and easy installation though instructions could be a little more detailed and descriptive. Quadratec has great customer support as well.
My drive jeep's front shaft came into contact with the skid plate at full droop and left a mark in the skid plate and on the drive shaft, but that problem can be fixed by shaving down a small section of the skid plate with a dremel.
I am not a mechanically inclined person but I was able to install the engine/Transmission skid plate along with the Transfer skid plate in an hour by myself. I’m not sure why they say you need two people but one can easily handle it. The most confusing part of the installation is looking at the instructions vs. doing it itself. Just take your time and it will be a breeze. The person who made a review in February claimed that he had to make alterations to the skid plate due to having a lift kit claiming the lift kit would get in the way. I have a 4” Teraflex lift and I did not have any conflicts between the lift and the skid plate. Nothing even close got in the way. The other reviewer should post which lift he is using. I will say that having a 4” lift and 35” tires makes it easier to move around underneath. So far I like what I see and if I have problems after a trail ride or two, I will report it.
Exactly what I needed. My 13 JKUR is my daily driver and trail runner. I wanted protection without the excess weight of steel plates. I install instructions are the best I've seen. Had it installed in thirty minutes.
Awesome, easy install.
I have this product from the manufacturer. It is very strong and has protected my engine for rock damage. Don't be put off by the fact it is aluminium, it still looks good after 2 years of hard driving. Well done for stocking this product.
Lightweight, supposed easy to install.
Solid and easy install. Well made product.
Packing Exterior box was open on delivery, no banding around the box. All parts were securely plastic wrapped into a single package so all parts were intact. Product quality is a 9.5 out of 10. All parts were in new condition, no scratches or blemishes on powder coat. Rating is less than 10 due to threads on nuts and nutplates. Before starting installation I did a full inspection on parts and quality. During the inspection I noticed that the bolts did not easily thread into the nuts. I used a 10mm 1.5 tap and cleaned the threads on every nut. Instructions are also 9.5 out of 10. Instructions are printed on very heavy paper which is great while you are doing the install. The print is clear and all parts are identified. The instruction process is perfect and if each step is followed as indicated in the instructions, installation is easy. I did find 1 issue with the instructions. It calls for a 18mm socket to be used. The 18mm did not work on the bolts I received but a 3/4" socket was perfect. I also used locktite on every nut and bolt for added security. I highly recommend this product. The design is good, installation instructions are almost perfect. And quality is great.
This is a nicely made skid plate that is easy to install. The cross bar is made from thicker material than the stock bar (under the transmission). The skid plate is made from 1/4" aluminum. This provides good protection for the engine and transmission for most off-roading situations. However, if you frequent hard-core rock trails and often scrape the underside, you would probably be better off with a steel plate that resists gouging better. The benefit of this plate is its light weight. The installation instructions are nicely printed, but the images are too small to understand parts orientation, particularly for the two braces that are near the engine. Fortunately, it is not difficult to figure it out on your own. There is a problem with the plate if you have a lift kit. I have a 3.5" lift and after installation I jacked the front of the Jeep off the ground to check clearances. The driveshaft contacts the lip that is bent up on the driver side. This is easily rectified by cutting about 1.5" off that lip. Quadratec should change the design. A second modification I made was to drill two drain holes in the cross bar. As delivered it will trap water. The stock cross bar had drain holes, so I copied that. The instructions direct you to remove and discard the stock transfer case skid plate. The implication is that you need their transfer case skid plate. However, it is easy enough to remove the stock t-case skid plate and cut the raised ears off with a Sawzall. It can then fit right under the rear edge of the Quadratec skid plate and they bolt in place together. I found washers that are the same thickness of the t-case skid plate to mount under the other two bolts that go to the cross bar, keeping the rear edge of the skid plate level. There is a rectangular port hole that allows draining oil from the engine. It appears to be large enough to do the job and not end up with a mess.
Very nice quality Skid Plate. Easy to install. The instructions were good and easy to follow. I just wish it was available in black. It would have saved me the extra cost to get it stripped and powder coated in black. There is plenty of clearance for the crossover exhaust pipe even with a set of exhaust spacers installed (Teraflex spacers in my case). However, I also purchased the matching transfer case skid plate which adds an extra 1/4" or so. I think there would still be plenty of clearance even without the transfer case skid. Time will tell how it holds up to trail abuse. But I think it will do well based on the quality of the construction and the apparent material quality. One thing that surprised me - It's made in Russia.
