Reviews for Quadratec 12500 0212 Aluminum Modular Engine and Transmission Skid Plate for 07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK
Excellent costumer service like always. Fast shipping. Now for the Skid Plate Review.
This plate is beefy. The new cross member is beefy. No loss of ground clearance. You can use the factory transfer plate if you grind the ears off of it. Works well. Looks good.
Aluminum
Seems sturdy and well built. I installed it myself just put the jeep up on ramps if you don’t have a lift. Hardest part was getting off the grinded down old bolts for the cross arm and transfer case skid. Also you can reuse the stock transfer skid plate despite what quadratec says. You just have to grind down the curved up ends by the front two bolts so you can slide it under this skid plate.
Put it on completely alone, at a leisurely pace, and only took an hour. Haven't whacked it yet, but it seems sturdy, and MUCH better than bare components!
A note, though: you CAN re-use the factory t-case skid. It fits neatly between the alu plate and the frame crossmember. (Though you'd need to re-use 2 of the old bolts to get it into the outer frame)
My husband wants it.
I haven't had a chance to test the capabilities of the skid plates yet but all of the parts and pieces seem to be well built and they were packaged unbelievably well. Installation was a breeze, I installed the engine/transmission skid and the transfer case skid at the same time in 2 1/2 hours, by myself, in my driveway, with all of the tires on the ground. My suggestions are to clean all of the mud from underneath the Jeep a couple days before, use ramps or jack stands for a little more room, and to chase the treads of all of the hardware before you crawl under the Jeep and find out it needs done. Hopefully I will have time to install the rest of the skid plate system next weekend.
Super happy with build quality and install. Went on quick and easy. I would have liked to see the body mount brackets be a littler beefier, but they work well.
Performance - I specifically bought them for a Jeep Jamboree. I did not hammer them, but I also don't hammer my jeep (although there were a few runs I had to put the hammer down). I am not a career rock crawler, but wanted protection. I have several scrapes marks from scraping on rocks. Skids are in great shape and did their job. Not sure I agree with other claims saying these are weak - they seem very strong and did exactly what i need while not adding a ton of extra weight. Super happy - just wish I would have done my gas tank at the same time.
If this transmission skid is half as tough as the packaging, they'll be bomb-proof. The fit and finish are fantastic and installation is simple even if you're not handy with a wrench. The bold heads are all recessed which is a huge plus. The new cross member is super strong and makes the stock crossmember look worthless. They cover from the engine in front of the oil pan all the way to the leading edge of the transfer case. Great coverage! And my after market CV drive shaft has no issues clearing the edge. My only recommendation would be to recess the cross member bolt holes at the frame rails. Given they're made of aluminum, they're light (compared to steel) and still remarkably stout. It should be fun to hammer them on a few rocks. Highly recommended!
Very easy to install. I did it by myself with the Jeep up on ramps. The only part of the install that was dramatically difficult and infuriating was removing it from the bubble wrap and packing tape. This could have fallen out of a plane and been undamaged on impact. I reused the factory transfer case skid plate, which fit without any trouble or modifications.
So far this is a 5 star. Very easy to install. My son and I did my jeep in about 90 minutes. Then we realized we can do it faster on his if we both used a socket set. Everything aligned perfectly. It would have been easier if we had a lift. The only issue is my son had an older jeep and two bolts were a little two big so we just used the old ones.
