Reviews for Pypes Performance Exhaust SJJ21R High Clearance Cat-Back System in Stainless Steel for 07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK
I put this system on about two months ago to get more room under the back of the jeep. I was worried at first due to a loud raspy exhaust note. But having had several performance systems on my mustangs I gave them awhile to burn in. Glad I did, now I love them, deep mellow tone until you punch it then it gets a little mean sided. Just takes a bit of time and miles to get then to settle into their rhythm.
Installed on a 07 JK Unlimited Sahara 3.8 L. Take off old exhaust and install new system in roughly around 45 minutes. ( By Myself ) Between all the research and videos I watched, not to mention I have no plans on keeping the old exhaust system. I decided just to start cutting and not even worry about the rusted clamps . ( make sure you use EYE protection and for safety have a fire extinguisher nearby, I used a cutting wheel ). I was able to take the clamp off coming from the cat to the mid pipe next to transit case. cut hangers off all factory exhaust and use a stiff flat head screw driver and silicone to pry off the rubber hanger grommets from the vehicle hangers. Do not cut hangers attached to vehicle need to use them hangers for the new system. Did not have to cut any of the mid pipe was a perfect fit out of the box. I Follow the instructions for installation had no issues, Was even able to use the extra support bracket next to the transfer case. ( instructions mention some vehicles transfer case might be in the way do not use. I had plenty of clearance Seen a couple comments were people mentioned the weight difference so I decided to weigh the systems. Stock exhaust roughly 35 pounds, SJJ21R high clearance cat back system stainless steel roughly 20 pounds = 15 pound weight loss. The system sounds great ( My son says it "sounds like a angry monster truck").
Don't forget there will be a difference in sound between the 3.8 L and a 3.6 L. And between the two door and four-door JK's. Will be uploading photos, get a chance check them out.
This exhaust system sounds awesome. It is a little loud at first. It’s more tame after a couple weeks. Sound like half way between a well tuned import and a small v8. Half hour install on my brand new four door.
Easy install
Perfect fit.
Great product has the good tone and is a great alarm clock for the neighbors lol.
Wow what a great deal. Great quality product, easy install, and it sounds great!!!
Easy to put on and sounds great. Best of all it's out of the way.
Easy to install, stock is a pain to remove. Sounds good, little loud in the cab but it was expected. Overall, great product for the money.
I have had several vehicles and aftermarket exhausts all which have fallen apart over time. Turns out it's due to the inferior metals some systems are made from. I call them inferior but I suppose not everyone in every state needs 304 stainless and can settle for a lesser metal. Due to my specific needs it came down to pypes and the borla systems. For $250 I decided pypes would be the better choice, I believe borlas ran no less than about $800 for a setup.
Pypes is simple, three pipes including the muffler and your done. Everyone is correct in saying the hardest part of replacing an exhaust is getting the old stock exhaust off. After that chaos was over, the pypes install took me maybe 45 minutes or so. Very clean and simple, it is a bit rice-like in its sound but the stock muffler is so boring I quite enjoy the change. Just go on YouTube and you can find several videos that are pretty clear in how it sounds.
I know the borlas are higher quality, and the climber version actually goes to the cats (which is the biggest letdown of pypes, they should have an option for this). But ultimately aside from money I wanted to get rid of any muffler on the back of the vehicle, which pypes successfully tucks the muffler slightly behind the diver near the frame. That, the cost, and the fact this is stainless 304 make this a good choice for anyone on a budget. Oh and don't forget the huge weight loss gain from trashing the stock muffler. I don't have numbers, but it's significant. I have added photos to show by comparison the stock system to the pypes system, something I didn't come across when searching for more information on pypes before my purchase.
Good product, could have more options from pypes for a bit more of a complete system, simple set up, a bit rice-like sounding, but overall totally worth. 5 stars no question for what this product is at this particular price point.
