Reviews for Tuffy Security Console Insert for 18-24 Jeep Wrangler JL & Gladiator JT
Great product (build quality). I've never struggled with assembling and installing something as much as I did this item. It was nearly impossible to fit both hands inside the console. Too much has to be done simultaneously (holding brackets, tightening the nuts / screws, all at the same time. I was patient and spent the time needed but wow, there has to be a better way to engineer this to make it easier on the install.
Well, this device is not the easiest to install, given the confined work space, requirements to get both hands inside not only the console, but inside the secured interior unit as well to put it together- sometimes, blindly. It takes patience and for me, stepping away from it a couple times to avoid tools flying through the windshield. Ultimately, once installed, the unit is sturdy and secure. I'll definitely feel better about leaving items in my Wrangler this summer!
Quality seems to be too notch. Fits very well. But wow, the install sucked. I was able to do it myself. At first, I thought I could just get at it. But after 30 minutes of confusion, I checked out a YouTube video and took the suggestion of half-assembling it outside the console. And that was a huge difference! I went back at it and it took no time at all. Some struggle because of the right space. Just make sure you have small tools (wrenches) to get inside.
It is a somewhat tedious install, my hands aren't mitts, but they aren't small either. I did have a little trouble with getting a couple of the holes to line up with the "leg" brackets, but using a big straight blade screw driver I could move it into place. Using an awl helped to get each of the holes to line up. I was surprised how secure the whole set up is. You do lose opening size for sure. I can no longer get my DSLR full size camera into the console, so it needs to go into the tailgate Tuffy box now.
Absolutely secure and tough piece of hardware as Tuffy is noted for. However a few thoughts regarding the installation (told from a guy with big hands and arthritis): Make sure you understand the door unit must go all the way to the bottom of the console as the sides will extend it back up to keep it about 1" below the top. The right and left braces go on pretty good but they want you to put the screw in upside down temporarily until you get the braces in. In order to do that and get two hands in there, I used masking tape to hold the screw from the bottom so I could start the nut and that worked very well. Then they will tell you to install the left brace first then the right. Baloney....install the right one first and once you take a look at what you're up against you'll see why that makes more sense. It's a common note on the jeep forum that you will have to drill a couple of the punched holes out so the screws will fit. That's true because the thicknesses don't all align properly...its no big deal. Getting a couple of the nuts in place could be attributed to luck or installation prayers. I was about an hour installing this only because I couldn't get my two monster hands in there at the same time. It's well worth it, it's a very tough secure unit. Have fun and spread everything out first because you won't be able to see how it all comes together when you cram everything into the console opening.
Just ordered and installed in our 2024 JL. While the design & functionality are fine, I’m disappointed to find that we had to use the shorter brackets in order for this to fit. What it leaves is only a couple of inches of space where items can be secured in the locked area.
I installed this in a rubicon 392. all rubicons will require the lower support arms , these are not included in the package. A quick call to Tuffy and they send them to you no cost.
However because the center console on the rubicon or any all 4 w drive wrangler, is so shallow that the space that is available with the security console lock box installed is so small that you can barely put more than a phone and perhaps a wallet in there, If you want to put a gun in the console, it will need to be a very small one,
since there is no way to put a lock box under the front seats as they were on a JK, you are left with this as well as a cabled box under the rear seat,
