Reviews for Tuffy Security Console Insert for 18-24 Jeep Wrangler JL & Gladiator JT
This thing is a beast. I'm no mechanical genius and it took me 20 minutes to install. Not sure why it took some people 2 days to put it together. I'm 6'4", 210 lbs and i was able to get my paws inside just fine. I had a more difficult time contorting my body to get the right angles. Anyway. The images in the instructions are pretty impossible to discern (very dark CAD images that are probably great in their native color...but they're printed in black and white) but if you simply READ the instructions and refer back to the parts list instructions as the parts are referenced, it should be pretty simple to throw together. The center console light ends up above the lid (which i prefer as opposed to inside the locked area) and the usb is still accessible. There's space to run a usb cable on either side of the hinge. The key can be removed when the lid is locked or unlocked. Great product.
I appreciated the review from Charles but I guess I have smaller hands. I had zero issues on the install or the order of the install. I will say it’s a bit tedious and uncomfortable getting your hands in there and tightening things up but that’s about it. I didn’t have to drill and pilot holes ... I simple banged the frame into alignment with the end of a ratchet. Pretty happy overall with the added security and somewhat easy install.
Tough build, fits without taking / wasting space and easy install with no new holes required
It's like doing origami inside out but is very secure in it's place.
No drill installation.
Design and description was better than amazons
Want locking storage
*I had to buy this product elsewhere unfortunately, because Quadratic was out of stock. But it's the same product.
TL;DR - extremely secure, great product, extreme frustration installing.
Someone asked why one would need this as the Jeep center console comes with a lock. Well, that lock is plastic on plastic and wouldn't take a very large crowbar at all to pop right off. Breaking into the OEM setup probably wouldn't look like breaking in at all. So do get this.
This thing is built like a tank once you get it installed and you'd have better luck drilling through the side of the center console, or calling a locksmith, if you forget the keys and want to get in this thing! It's that sturdy, truly. I really don't know how it would be possible to gain access to this if you aren't a locksmith or happen to have a cutting torch handy! Short review: it's secure, I'd buy it again and am glad I have it.
Now...for the bad. The installation.
Take the instructions that come with it and slowly, gently, calmly, rip them into little strips and let them peacefully drift away in the wind. (Do not litter.) Take deep breaths. The world is a kind and gentle place; everything will be alright.
Watch some videos on YouTube on how to install this thing. Watch them again. Piece it together to see how all the parts connect (don't tighten anything without it being in place in your Jeep) so you understand what you will be doing without the benefit of your eyesight.
Now...find a headlamp. Seriously, I wore a headlamp so I could try to see what I was doing installing this. You must install it in place inside your console; that's one reason why it's so secure. The nuts that secure the screws are on the bottom of the panels of this and there's a lip that means you have to angle your wrench down into the console, then somehow back up and under the lip on the bottom of the sides to secure the nut while you tighten with the phillips head screwdriver. It is maddening. It's frustrating. Then you get to the rear left corner screw.
There's a guide arm that is supposed to prop open the vault. This majorly gets in the way of securing the rear left screw and nut. It's maddening. Then this guide arm, for some strange reason, uses an Allen key (I guess because it's smaller than a wrench?) instead of the same screwdriver you've been using. But, you still have to use a wrench to hold the nut on the inside facing the console side (unless you have baby hands and tools that bend the laws of physics, it's infuriating).
I have replaced the LCD panel on many laptops; these have TINY screws, ribbon cables, tiny delicate parts. That tedious task doesn't come close to the sheer frustration of trying to get a decent angle to tighten all the screws and nuts on this. I thought I'd seen it all with dismantling and reassembling laptops. Nope.
I over-tightened the part that holds the lid up when you open it, so it's bending the metal back and forth on that when I open and close it. I don't even care. I lack the will to go in and work on it further. Plus it's not really necessary; I don't need it propped open.
End result: I've very glad I got this product. It is the most secure container for a consumer vehicle I think I've come across and I'd imagine the whole vehicle would be stolen before anyone got in this thing! Oh yeah, when it's unlocked, you can dismantle it and presumably use it in a different vehicle, so it isn't permanent. Also save your rubber pad in the bottom because that still fits after installation.
So, I'd store diamonds in there in a bad neighborhood. But as for the install, send the wife and kids (or husband and kids as the case may be) to the park and tell them to have fun and come back in an hour or two when you've finished swearing at this during installation.
Works really well once you get it installed. The installation was a bit tough if you've got larger hands. You are essentially building the lockbox inside the console, and there isn't a ton of room for maneuvering. Once you've got it build, it is VERY sturdy. I am very happy with it, it seems pretty dang secure!
Some what of a pain to install but once in works great
