Reviews for Smittybilt 812101 Vaulted Glove Box in Black for 87-95 Jeep Wrangler YJ
It was a bit difficult to install this due to removing the stock glove box. Once it was out, it was fairly easy to install the new "vault". It has as much if not more room than the stock unit, and the grab handle on the front makes it difficult for me to dislodge my front seat passenger.
My only complaint is that the door rattles a lot, and I haven't found a way t make it stop rattling.
Good quality and sturdy a good purchase. No big deal but the lock I got is different than the picture (standard key). Would be nicer if the key was not needed for closing the door. Removing the back nuts is a real issue, the access is a little difficult but the real issue in my case is that bolts turned with the nuts and there is no way to hold them. Ended up damaging the old one to take it out (it was in bad shape anyways that's why I was changing it). Fits perfect in my '88 YJ. Would buy it again.
Good sturdy build, and welding. The finish is a little off , but not a deal breaker. For the installation the four screws that hold the glove box in place it may be a little challenging. I gave it a healthy try and then employed my trusty Dremel. Opening and closing are solid and pretty smooth. I think it gives the interior a more Jeep look than the original plastic glove box and grab bar.
This glove box is very high in quality, looks great, and in my 1989 Wrangler YJ, it was very easy to install... The only thing I do not like about it is that the lock is cheap on it, in my opinion, if you’re going to market a “vaulted” glove box, it needs to be more secure than this... Other than that, I am very pleased with the appearance of it and the overall quality of the metal it is made of... It fits like a glove!!!
Install not for the weak hearted. A real pain taking the old glove box out. rusted screws, etc. I finally got pi@@ed and got my sawz all out and just cut it out. Like the fit. Finish is a little rough... But its a Jeep right?
Looks great and works OK but lock is cheap
I like it, could be a little better quality.
For the price it's decent. It's not going to win any car shows. It is stout but more attention to detail should have been taken. The cable to keep the door from opening too far is too long and it looks like someone forced open the door and bent the housing. The hinge binds somewhere from being bent.
The box is rugged looking with raw weld lines; looks great on the jeep. The fit, while not perfect was decent. The key is needed to close the door so the box will always be locked when door is closed. The door does not sit flush with the face of the box, I am going to have to get creative to get the door to sit flush.
Save yourself time and aggravation, just cut the old box out but be careful as there is plenty of wiring near the speaker. If your jeep has AC, you will NOT be able to get the screws out on the left side from under the dash. If you just cut the old box out, it is not that difficult of a job.
Not sure if it is a new "feature" but I had a roll of foam tape that when stratically placed solved the loose door problem.
The hinge problem is unreal. I had to bend, tweak, and force to finally get the door to close and look halfway presentable.
All my Smittybilt products I purchased were good quality, until this piece of junk. Can't believe they put their name on it, and can't believe Quadratec is selling it.
