Reviews for Quadratec LED Tail Light Kit for 97-06 Jeep Wrangler TJ
Yeah, I’m afraid to share my story because it’s embarrassing. I removed my old lights, Plugged these in and they didn’t work. Asked 2 aircraft electricians for help, 2 hrs later they couldn’t figure it out. Thought the plugs were wired wrong on both of them. Tried hooking them directly to the battery, nothing. Then, one of my electrician friends looked up and said “We are all morons”! “Bolt then to the body”. I said “what”??? He said there is no ground wires, the body of the light IS the ground!
We bolted them down, they worked! They’re bright! We were not.
So, don’t Wire then and have them sit on your bumper while you “test” them. Wire them and Bolt then to the Jeep. They work spectacularly.
Tough to install passenger side light and a warning if you test your lights.
I actually had to go from beneath and find where the passenger side light connected to the harnass and unclip it there - it would not pull out of the hole at all. (My connection was also taped together with some foam tape which I had to unravel. I am the first owner and it came like this from Jeep evidently).
After I hooked the lights up and changed the flasher assembly only the driver side light worked. After trial and error I found out that you have to bolt the light back into the jeep in order for the circuit or ground to be complete - once I did that both side worked. (I tested the lights with the dangling from the cord originally - my rookie mistake).
Easy install
The instructions (and I saw this in a comment) only focused on the drivers side light. The harness can be pulled out from the light and unplugged. On the passenger side the harness can be accessed from behind the rear tire. Once unplugged the new cable from the new light can be fished down using a aluminum or copper wire (8-10 inches is what I used). It wasn't too bad and, just need to be in the instructions.
As someone else stated "Great look on the Tail lights. However anyone who has the Smittybilt Rear Euro Tail Light Guards these will not fit (like me). Wish something was on the either this product information page or the Tail Light Guard page." I am running into the same problem. The QT replacements are about 1/4 inch deeper than OEM, and as such, they fit tight into the RR frames. Add to that you need to remove the lenses to bolt them in and your stuck. They CAN be mounted, but it took me a good hour to do drivers side. You have to use trim tools to be able to force the lens back into the RR housing after you mount them. Not looking today doign passengers side today. I may have to cut wire to extend the harness enough to move lens out of way.
I love the lights and they are easy to install. Only problem I had was I did not install the three bolts on new light and just hooked them up and tried it. They did not work! I panicked and thought I was going to have to cut the wires. Luckily I read reviews and seen the lights need to bolted to the jeep for a ground. Did it and they worked. Love the look
Overall, I'm very happy with these tail lights. Both the brake lights and the reverse lights are very bright. The LED's look so much better than the dim stock lights and have a much more modern look. They are also very easy install, but I definitely recommend either deep sockets or a socket extender to more easily reach the bolts connecting it to the tub.
I'm giving these 4 stars however because I just had to order a second pair of them after only having the first pair for a little over 2 years / 8,000 miles (not driven much). The driver side reverse light had completely stopped working. I took the assembly apart to look for anything loose and reseated/cleaned the wiring harness connector to no avail. I had expected LED's to last much longer than they did. Due to how these are manufactured, if one lighting element goes bad, you'll have to replace the whole unit.
I still recommend them though as they are not too crazy expensive and look fantastic. Just be prepared to replace them in a couple years.
These are exactly what I was hoping they'd be. They look JUST like the pictures (which is rare) They're super bright (see pictures I took on a sunny day) They are one solid cast of light, very well diffused unlike some versions I've seen where you can still see the individual led's when up close. Like other reviews said, they only take 15 minutes to install, 100% plug and play with built in resistors so you don't get any flicker issues or burn out bulb indicators on your dash. My only complaint with the lights is that installing any guards on them would be a pain in the ass as you would have to unplug and re plug the wiring ,
Fit perfect on my '98 TJ, easy to install, work great! Plastic housings, but at least they won't rust out!
I see these on other vehicles around town and they look great. They felt like they were good quality, they did not work on my 2003 Jeep. Even with the flasher upgrade.
