Does this fit a 1997 JEEP TJ that has an AX-15?

No, it will not. The application for 1997 is part number 04882436. Unfortunately we do not have a supplier for that models shift lever. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Does this fit a 2001 jeep cherokee with a manual transmission?

No. The shifter level for a 2001 will carry a part number 52079224 or 52104163AB but we do not have a supplier for it at this time. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Do I need to put any kind of grease on this before instillation?

Yes, from the service manual on installation of AX-15..."Lubricate contact surfaces of release fork, lever and pivot ball stud. Then install bearing, fork and clip in clutch housing."
