Reviews for B&M Racing 45195 Precision Sport 6-Speed Shifter for 07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK
Bought to replace stock shifter on a 2007 JKU Rubicon. Stock unit would no longer stay in first gear at all and was starting to be very loose in third. Instructions were not exact for my 2007, the console comes out slightly different (had to remove the whole thing, not just the front insert) and my fuel tank has 8 bolts, not 7. All in all, it took about 6 hours. The actual shifter remove and install is less than 30 mins once you get at it.
How does it work? Stays in first gear now. The ball and sprint detents are quite stout. You know when you're in gear. It does take getting used to, especially after having a very loose stock unit for so long. No issues getting into any gear except a little hard to find 6th. It feels like less motion side to side is required. I was able to shift with a finger. Now it takes a firm grip. I assume it'll loosen up a bit, as it's only been 2 days of driving so far.
I had to get my transmission rebuilt for the "synchro grind" issue and had the shop install this since they didnt charge for any extra labor. Overall, I am glad that I did it because I figured its just another part that probably would've gone bad but its not a necessity. You could get something more valuable for $500.
Easy install. I used the shift and handle assembly on mine.
For you muscle heads out there its like an old muscle car with a short straight hurst comp plus on a Muncie M21 - A drag race car feeling - short and blunt! Detents are crisp and strong!
It Creates a short, crisp, tight shift but almost too much so! a 1-2 shift gets harder if your trans is problematic to start with.
What it doesn't do - It wont fix the "hard to find or wont go into reverse problems at all.
What it does do - It does stop the popping out of or not going into first all the way issue.
Overall - It takes some getting use to and if your trans does not have internal problems as these units are prone to it would probably be extremely nice. Either way it takes some getting use to. By the way - good lick getting the OEM shift knob off!
I installed this on a brand new replacement transmission in hope that it would forestall the issues I experienced on the first transmission. B&M states this shifter has more firm detents which would keep it from popping out of gear. Within 8,000 miles that issue began to occur. So not a cure. However, this shifter does tighten the shift pattern which I loved and my wife hated.
I've had 9 Jeep JKs with Manual transmission. I installed this shifter even though I had no big transmission issues on my 2016 JKU Rubicon. I feel I have messed up my jeep. The shifting is really hard and transmission was making noise on the highway on 3 and 4 gears. I like the shifter for it's over all quality and it's heavy duty. I've driven my jeep 500 miles and it's only slightly more comfortable. I'm using Royal Purple Syncromesh fluid that was in place 2 months prior to installing the B&M. That fluid took a few days of driving until I felt the smoother shifting. I'm very familiar with the JK Manual transmission issues popping out of gear. That was more common on the early manual transmission for example 2007. Shifter does have lifetime warranty. I am using the stock shift lever.
Driven manual trans for over 20 years. Jeep NSG370 in a 15 JKU, is poorly designed, synchronizers are the issue. I took a chance and spent the money for this unit, put it on in spring. It did not come with the bolt that prevents shifter from swiveling on the shifter assy. Had to go to home depot to get the bolt. The unit and shift lever are high quality, at 6’4” the shift lever is short, and is hard to shift! You almost have to bump it to get it to go out of a gear. This is was very annoying but I lived with it. I have had repeated issues with the shifter lever coming lose and spinning freely on the shifter box. Luckily I had my tools to pull the console and retighten. Eventually used Loctite. Worked for a while. Last straw, it came lose once more, and the allen bolt that goes through the shifter lever, had sheared from torqueing to snug up. I just reinstalled my original OE shifter assy. WOW! The smoothness and ease of shifting , and the taller lever is day and night difference. So glad I went back to my OE shifter. Sad that I paid so much for this. I really liked it and wanted it. Cant stabilize shifter lever, lever to short, too hard to shift. my personal experience and about 6 months review
