Reviews for Tuffy Tailgate Security Enclosure for 07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited
Save yourself the aggravation and spend the extra $100 for the deluxe model. With the sidewalls on this one, the back is too narrow to fit your freedom panels. That was the primary reason I bought it.
Great way to secure items in the jeep when the top is off. The fit gave me trouble, though. It was so tight that I had to assemble it in place. The directions have you build it, then lift and install it.... tried that with no success. So good item. Works as described, but huge pain to install.
Installation of this item in my 2014 JK 4-door was by far the most challenging of any of the multiple Tuffy products I've owned. First I had to drill out the holes for the assembly bolts with a 1/4" drill bit, because they were too small for the bolts to fit. But by far, the biggest problem was with the instructions (or lack thereof). The instructions are TERRIBLE, and I couldn't find any install videos online. Real photos and written, step-by-step instructions (with actual language instead of tiny black and white drawings and icons) would have been very useful. After assembling the side pieces backwards (because the awful illustration didn't even resemble the actual side panels), I had to remove them and start all over. Then, getting the fully assembled piece into the back of the Jeep required quite a bit of wrestling, with the back seats folded completely down, and figuring out by trial and error (again, because the instructions didn't clearly explain what was required) exactly what needed to happen (Hint: bring it in through the rear doors instead of the tailgate). Once it got properly aligned (at a downward angle), everything snugly fit into place, and the tolerances and dimensions are perfect. Another well-designed and well crafted product from Tuffy, just needs real instructions and a good installation video.
Ok, so it does work. That’s the good. The bad: plan on 4.5 hours installation; you’ll want at least two 30 minute cry breaks and then a recovery period to reflect on your life choices. The instructions are a a joke. No, seriously, someone created a long running gag by creating this poorly drawn attempt. There are no recognizable shapes in the drawings, at least not in this reality. My epileptic mini-Weiner dog could have conceived a more understandable instruction sheet while in the throes of a seizure. During install, you will contemplate life, experience fear never before felt or even known to humanity and wonder what evil hides in your heart to deserve this punishment. If you successfully complete this job, you will sense victory only known by the great Heroes of history and legend-such as King Arthur, Hercules, and Captain America. If you do choose this path, I pray that God watch over you. Good luck.
I would have sent this back if I wasn't doing this install with my daughter and wanted to spend some extra time with her. first the box looked great, but parts were bent inside so I dunno, bad packaging? The instructions are terrible, and this is a new version of this trunk with a piano hinge, so I got an 'updated' version of the part I bought because it was on back order so long. Well this new version sucks. The parts don't line up so we had to trim some corners with the ol' tin snips to make them fit. once the trimming was done the holes lined up but we realized they are two different size holes. So we had to break out the drill and open up all of the holes on the side brackets to get the hardware to fit. There is a tiny script on the instructions that say that if you don't have factory rear tie downs you are hosed and need another bracket that is not supplied to complete the install. I did not know this and so we had to come up with a whole new solution to tie in the front of the security trunk to the jeep deck behind the rear seats. This was ok, like I said, I wanted to spend time with my daughter but what a joke. I am fortunate that I had some angle iron, 1/4 SS hardware and a good set of tools, plus my Daughter is a welder so she loves to fabricate stuff. Tuffy used to make solid products that fit perfectly but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. All done though it looks good and works but I feel like we had to do a lot more to make it happen than we should have.
BUYER BEWARE!! The description states that the top cover can be removed. IT CAN'T! The front panel (which goes against the back of the seats) and the lid are attached with a piano hinge, making it ONE PIECE! I just git off the phone with Tuffy and they informed me that they switched from the removable top to the hinged top almost SEVEN YEARS AGO and that Quadratec has never updated the website description. To make things worse, the instructions are horrendous! I've seen Ikea instructions that were more clear. Hey Tuffy- Instead of generic instructions that look they came from some product out of China, how about item specific instructions with PICTURES!!??
Literal junk. Had the same problems as other reviewers. Pieces were bent on arrival. Parts don’t fit without modifications, all hardware is not included, but you can buy separately (if they were in stock) or try to fabricate your own. All in all this is the worst thing I’ve ever received from Quadratec. They are accepting it as a return hassle free. Would not recommend.
Very bad product. The bolts didn’t fit fit through the holes. On top of that the holes don’t even line up properly. You’re better off spending more for a better product. Wouldn’t recommend at all.
