Reviews for Mishimoto MMRAD-WRA-87 Aluminum Radiator for 87-06 Jeep Wrangler YJ, TJ & TJ Unlimited with 2.5/4.0L
Perfect replacement with the added benefit of better cooling performance. I paired this with the aluminum electric fan and it made a world of difference.
Very well constructed. Has kept the engine temps cooler by a minimum of 10 degrees.
I don’t know about lacking because I installed it just today. BUT they don’t plug and play fit with a/c radiator. It touches the air conditioner radiator at the bottom. It touches the air conditioner radiator at the bottom.
After seeing some of the negative reviews thought I would share my experience with this radiator. I purchased an 01 TJ that had just had one of these installed in it, the previous owner, who did the install, didn't mention any problems. After six weeks I noticed antifreeze leaking from what appeared to be the radiator which was discouraging since I thought that was one item I would not have to worry about for awhile. It appeared to be leaking from the upper tubes where they meet the header plate but was hard to see exactly. After closer inspection I noticed a mark on the under side of the hood where the radiator cap has been rubbing on the hood. Long story short, I rinsed off all of the antifreeze residue that looked like a leaking radiator, shimmed the hood bumpers about 1/16 of an inch and have been driving it for 2 weeks with no leaking. The hood was bumping the cap just enough when pressured up to make it look like a leak but it's not, so maybe check that out if you think yours is leaking.
Great radiator. No fittment issues. I would give it 5 stars if it weren’t for the fact that the fittings provided for the automatic transmission cooler were completely inadequate. Fortunately for a few dollars I was able to purchase the stock push in adapters from Dorman.
Fit great, but no directions. Comes with a little hardware and a couple differences from stock so I had to figure it out. Should have something in the way of literature.
Like the previous reviewer stated, the bolts aren't the same thread. What I did was remove the clip in nut things and threw a washer and nut on their bolts. They should include washers and nuts pie habe the same thread. The holes for the shroud had the same issue, the 4 that came out were self tapping and a different thread. They did happen to be the same as the stick radiator bolts, which you end up with 6 extra, so that worked out. One important thing to note, if toy have air conditioning, this won't fit. You can possibly modify it, but it hits both the lines going to the condenser, as well as the condenser itself. My a.c. was long dead, so I just pulled it out. Radiator itself is great, although out doesn't keep my tj 10deg cooler, it does a little, 2-5 deg maybe.
I’ve had this Mishimoto Radiator in my 2001 TJ since December 2017 and put over 25k miles on it since then. So far is holding up great with no leaks, and with a good heavy duty fan clutch keeps my Jeep around 180-190 during hot summer days.
The biggest and most recent problem I’ve had was the drain plug started leaking, I went to tighten it, and the head of the bolt twisted right off with very little force. The aluminum drain plug bolt was hollow and not very thick.
I called MishiMoto and they said if I couldn’t get the broken bolt out they would send me a new radiator or new drain plug if I did. Luckily the rest of the bolt came right out and ran to the hardware store and got a stainless steel M12 1.5 pitch bolt ( was little longer but still fit), added some gasket sealer and the washer from the old bolt and sealed up perfect for $2 while the new plug is sent to me.
I like the radiator but it's not 100% direct fit. I had to remove the hood support rod to stop the radiator from getting all scratched up since this radiator interferes with the rod. Also, the threading of the longer bolts they provide to allow for the rubber isolators do not match the threading of the stock retaining clips they screw into. No warnings about either of these issues.
These Mishimoto radiators have poor quality control. I've gone through three of them and the final solution they offered me was a bottle of K-seal.....I originally bought the radiator with high hopes of replacing my failing factory radiator with a better one - not the case. If you like removing and replacing radiators - this is the part for you....
