Reviews for Crown Automotive RT21004 Heavy Duty Steering Kit for 97-06 Jeep Wrangler TJ & Unlimited and 91-01 Cherokee XJ
All is good.
I had the same issues with the sleeves as mentioned in the comment below. They were not tapped properly as the threads were not even, and the threads were not far enough into the sleeve to allow for full adjustment of the tie rod and drag link. I ended up buying new sleeves from Advance Auto Parts made by Moog Part number ES2079S, which set me back $60. One of the grease zirk fittings was missing which i had to replace with a new one. I also ordered new boots from Quadratec as the ones in the set are garbage. You also will need to paint the tie rods ends as they are bare steel, and the new sleeves you buy to prevent it from rusting extremely fast. Decent price, but not as good considering alot of the material is poor quality and needs to be replaced.
Nice heavy duty unit, but not without installation challenges.
The Good:
Stout and rugged build
Considerably heavier than stock, I would say both bard are 2X the diameter of the stock unit and solid steel rod instead of the stock rolled/stamped hollow rod
Tie rod ends fit perfectly into the spindles and pitman arm
The BAD:
The adjusting collars are junk and completely useless
The threading doesn't go far enough into the collar, both the tie rod and the tie rod end bottom out in the adjuster before they are threaded in far enough to match the stock length needed to make alignment possible.
The Fix:
This set up is basically the grand Cherokee ZJ tie rod upgrade we've all read about
Go to local auto parts store and pick up adjusting sleeve for a V8 ZJ and everything fits perfectly
I expect this will work fine for many years, and its considerably heavier and more rugged than stock
The failed machining on the adjusting sleeves is an issue relatively easy to overcome and installation and fit are near perfect once you get the correctly machined sleeves.
I've broken two sets of these. They work for up to 33s but the TRE don't last very long for 35s and actually wheeling.
Very stiff, no performance complaints. But after only a few weeks, one grease boot has already blown. I only drove it for 80 miles
Giving it three because set up has lasted a while. But quality is poor but that’s because it is cheap, you buy what you get. Just recently found out my passenger inner tie rod end was broken the joint was popping out of place so I couldn’t get alignment done. Also when I first installed it all of my bolt that held the clamps together stripped because of cheap metal they use I had to buy my own. I wouldn’t consider buying this again unless for a quick fix?, I’m not buying crown ever again though quality is poor.
Same as zj steering. You can buy zj parts for the same price or cheaper. It works.
Meh. Quality is very bad. Using a ratchet and torque wrench I ended up stripping the threads from thr tie rod portion at the driver side knuckle and and where the tie rod attaches to the drag link. Not very happy about the quality at all
The units installed into the same holes/location with no issues. The replacement did the trick and improved steering. I have had the kit installed for about 4-5 months now and the passenger Tie Rod boot has blown already. The drivers side tie-rod end is rusty after one trip in the snow. I would have thought the units would have been coated. my under carriage looks really nice except for the rusty adjustable tie-rod end. I did experience a quality control issue. the threads on one of the tie-rods were burred really bad. I was able to fix it myself after an hour or so of work with a hard wire brush, file and muscle. One thing that worried my very much so was the poor packaging. The units were placed in a box with no foam or anything. I know that they are hardened steel but I would have thought that some care would have been given to the packaging as to prevent shipping damage. Price was right but I would spend more for a better quality kit like I will for my JK. a torn boot, poorly threaded end an no provisions for preventing rust. I would not purchase again. it was too much work to have to do it all over again. Nothing but quality parts for me for here on out.
This part is junk
description states that it works on rock crawlers and off road
installed in nov 2022 customer drove 3549 miles on city and highway driving only
customer was having tire wear problems
tie rods were already loose and alignment shop would not align.
