Reviews for Flowmaster FlowFX Cat-Back Exhaust System for Jeep Wrangler TJ
This is exactly what I was looking for at a great price. The black ceramic exhaust tip looks great. Finally, my 4.0 sounds mean, which is what I wanted. Just be warned that it’s definitely much louder than stock.
Great sound. Not obnoxious but definitely takes some time getting use to from stock. Overall, nice upgrade in looks and performance for a reasonable price.
Sounds great. Not too loud but not too quiet either. Install was pretty simple. Only complaint is that the finish on the tip comes off easily. Other than that it's a great product.
The reviews
Bought for my TJ 4.0L, great sound, crackles and occasional pops but after 2 weeks of it installed there seems to be a rattle from inside the muffler which happens everytime I start the jeep until the idle settles. Will see how long I can bare it until I go for something else
I installed this kit on my 2.5... It sounds less savory than I'd hoped for, even after watching videos and listening to sound clips. Kinda ricey, but I also understand it's 4 cylinder. Way louder than I expected too, but I can deal with it. Not too bad at idle, honestly. My biggest complaint is the supplied clamps that Flowmaster includes. In my case, the "z notch" system that another reviewer mentioned is kinda silly, and the clamps do not cover the entire split which caused major leaking on my install. I ended up going to buy some Tiger Patch tape at the local parts store to wrap at each joint, then put the clamps over the tape. Finally got it sealed up, but I was still disappointed that I had to spend the extra money and effort on a kit that should have been an easier install than it was. I'm not recommending this kit, but I'm not entirely dismissing it either. It's a good bang for the buck. I'm just suggesting that if you do decide to buy it, go out and buy a couple 2 and a half inch or even 3 inch exhaust band clamps and use those instead of the ones that Flowmaster includes.
Nice sound and fit well once modified to fit. Tailpipe diameter and muffler inlet are exactly the same size. Had to notch tailpipe in several spots so it would slide into muffler with some effort. Not good craftsmanship flowmaster.
So let me start off by saying, my jeep is an early build 2000. I know jeep did some different things with exhaust between 99 and 2000, and I think mine was caught in the middle of that.
So the fitment of this exhaust was okay. It leaked upon installation, but I blame that on the fact that this exhaust has had work done on it before. With a few welds, we sealed up the leaks and it sounds nice.
Now why the 2 star review? The exhaust tip was welded on UPSIDE DOWN from the factory. We had to cut it off and completely invert it to fit correctly. Someone must have been lazy.
All that aside, this exhaust does have a very nice throaty tone, and compliments the I6 4.0 very well.
I would not purchase this flowmaster system if I had to do it over. Like others said the exit port on the muffler is the exact same diameter as the exhaust. The z cut on the exhaust is of no help. This is not a bolt on application and will require extra tools or pieces to make this work.
Installing this kit was unnecessarily difficult. The muffler and tail pipe were exactly the same diameter, as was the pipe coming out of the cat. As a result, none of the pipes would mate up any which way I tried. The instructions didn't mention how to work with the "Z-notches" cut into the pipe, but after finding a video on Flowmaster's YouTube channel, it was clear these pipes were not going together easily. I had to cut notches in both the brand-new pipe and muffler as well as the pipe on the Jeep, and use a tailpipe flaring tool with an impact gun just to get the pipe started. We got the pipes in as far as they could possibly go but they still didn't fully cover the Z-notch openings. To top it all off, the hose clamps provided didn't even fit and, because the pipes didn't fully seat, I had to get longer rubber isolators to compensate. This means that the tailpipe is hanging lower and longer out the back, defeating the purpose of a high-tuck system. I am extremely disappointed because I waited over 6 months for this kit to be in stock thinking it was a great value for the price. Instead I had to rent a tool and spend an extra $30 in parts, and it doesn't even perform as advertised. I'm now going to have to pay a shop to cut and weld all the parts just to get it done right. Because I'm sure there is exhaust leaking at every joint, I can't even comment on how it sounds. Buyer beware; you get what you pay for.
