Reviews for Quadratec Spare Tire Mount 2 Bike Rack for 87-24 Jeep Wrangler YJ, TJ, JK & JL
I like that it can be used when having a spare mounted camera.
It doesn't interfere with the tailgate operation.
Hope it works for my 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe.
Fits the ski rack that Quadratec sells and allows for door opening. I'd have liked higher quality buckles for the straps, perhaps self-ratcheting.
I just installed this rack on a 2020 Wrangler Unlimited. Total time was about one hour, as the rack required several adjustments in order to fit snugly. I highly recommend having a helper as you are testing out the fit. As mentioned in other posts, it would be fairly easy to scratch your paint if you don’t have the rack adjusted perfectly. Once I adjusted the rack, which was quite easy, it does not rub against the paint and the fit is excellent. One other suggestion-use a small adjustable wrench when making adjustments, as the provided wrench is not very substantial.
Excellent build, sturdy and pretty easy set up. Just one aspect needs fine tuning. Being that many wrangler owners have custom tires, the straps are a bit short if you have larger tires. I have 35" tires. You can still assemble the carrier but it is hard to tighten a strap when there is only 1-2" left to pull. I had to get a little creative and came with a great solution: I put the rear door straps (the ones with the tabs that go under your rear door) into the The buckles meant for the around the tire strap, that way there is plenty strap left to tighten and it pulls down the carrier on the tire, making it very secure. Then, the one strap that is meant to go around the tire, I wrapped it around one of the pillars on the rim (the top pillar, without interfering with the camera) and threadrf it through the insife of the rim and back and over the tire, tying each end of the strap to the upper buckles that were meany to be for the door straps. This way the strap pulls down the carrier on the tire, keeping it even more secure. The bottom strap that secures the bottom bar of the carrier to the tire is ok. I would just suggest a change, a small adjustment to make it pulling on it symmetrical and centered so you can pull better (right now, because of the tire rim, you end up pulling slightly from one side).
So the easy fix on quadratec´s part would be just to provide sligthly longer (and wider?) straps to make the carrier more versatile and sturdy. But also, they may want look at my strap set up as it seems more secure to me than the original specs.
I did not have issues with scratching the paint because i have the heavy duty tire carrier that separates the tire plenty from the back of the jeep. But again, an easy fix would be to provide those grey foam tubes for the back of the carrier, with some kind of stops so they don´t fall down. The foam tubes for the front, which are meant to rest on the tire, don´t do much in my case, the tire is not going to get damaged by them tubes, but i put them on anyways. Hope this helps...
I just received this and the install took about an hour, being careful about the paint mentioned in the other reviews. I have aftermarket tires and wheels on my Rubicon, with a Teraflex spare tire mount. The mount lifts the tire up and out as I had no room with the stock mount. The bike rack does not come close to the paint, disaster averted. The tailgate straps are barely long enough with this setup. I don’t think the tailgate straps would be long enough for a 35” tire with the steel bumper group. I only run a little larger 33” tire from stock,. I would also be concerned about the weight put on the tailgate without the reinforcement options. Overall, this looks like a quality rack!
Just received and finished putting together. The comment about the mislabeled strap was VERY helpful. It is mislabeled in the instructions. I had a little trouble getting the screws into the crossbar as the holes didn't align very well. But after some wiggling and pressure I got it together. So far, I like it.
first off the carrier is nice looking and it does fit a 35" tire and holds a Large Trek Marlin bike well ... two issues i have with it, 1. it started rusting from the inside and water gets trapped inside of it. 2. it cannot carry a large + medium trek marlin bikes at the same time the two mounting points are way too close to each other. might be the frame design of the bike but i think it's the carrier.
This is a good rack. It is difficult to get the rack perfectly installed with all of the adjustments. But, it must be perfectly installed to avoid scratching the paint. There is also the possibility of scratching when driving (bumps etc) because the bike rack bars are so close the back of the car. Good bike rack... I wish it was better.
