Reviews for DV8 Offroad TCJL-01 Tailgate Mounted Tire Carrier for 18-21 Jeep Wrangler JL
Would have given 5 stars except DV8 didn’t send correct hardware to install , not Quadratec’s issue , reached to DV8 and they are sending me the correct hardware kit , so double check hardware before installing .
Ordered this, not all the parts came with the mount. No spacers or replacement bolts for the tail gate hinges. Second no matter what I do my stock rim will not fit (it hits against the 3rd brake light mount. Also the mounting tabs are to tall to clear the rims (18"). I've tried every combination of bolt holes to get the right clearance for the tire to no avail. No way would I recommend this to anyone. I'm going to have to fabricate a mount for my third brake light. I guess I should've spent a little more coin and bought a better mount.
First, the hardware does not include replacement bolts for the 4 hinge bolts which from factory are a tapered seat. The spacers they "include" are barely adequate because they do NOT take into account the depth of the tapered seat for the hinges leaving the body bracket to hit the hinges and inevitably rub the paint off of both the hinges and the bracket. The hardware is simple grade 5 zinc coated hardware that will rust leaving you with a unsightly finished installation after a while. I ended up buying all stainless hardware, thread lock, black hammered finish paint, and the 4 M10x1.5 bolts needed to replace the hinge bolts that aren't included.
Second, the body vents have to be modified to allow the bracket to mount as DV8 intended however there is not template so you have to juggle the main bracket and mark the locations you need to trim. The best way I found to do this was to remove them completely after marking them and using a dremel tool to make a clean finish. This goes to suggest the instructions which, do NOT come in the box, are inadequate not thorough by any means.
Third, the camera hole is not near wide enough to provide a full view of the rear as you get from the factory. So again I had to brake out a die grinder and modify the opening to restore the full visibility of the rear view camera.
When it was all said and done I spent an additional $60 on hardware, the installation took more than 6 hours, and I'm still not satisfied. I contacted DV8 on social media and email provided enough detail and pictures (requested) and 5 days later I haven't heard back from them about my concerns.
Some additional R&D and better hardware would have made this mediocre produce much better and I would have been willing to pay just a little more for better hardware.
I give this item 1 star only because it is nicer looking than some of the alternatives out there right now. Right out of the box it was missing several pieces of hardware (hinge bolts and spacers) and had no instructions included. Luckily I found an install guide on the manufacturer's website and was able to get it installed. One of the first things you are told to do in the instructions is to cut off the plastic tabs around the tail gate vents. I was not happy to have to do that right from the start. After finally getting this installed, I found that this tire carrier is not as deep as the stock tire carrier, so my 35x12.5 tires kept the wheel from sitting flush against it. My solution was to extend the camera housing plate out 1" from the base. The backup camera housing is also not well designed. The camera sits too far back inside the housing and the hole for the camera is too small, which leaves only a very narrow field of view on the screen when backing up. This renders the camera almost useless. I plan to enlarge the camera opening to give a larger field of view to the camera. Overall, this part has been very frustrating to deal with, and I would not recommend it to anyone. What should have been a 1 hour install turned into a weekend headache and 3 trips to the hardware store.
