oh no we're screwed hey Rob here for Quadratec.com welcome to another episode of the Quadratec Academy where we cover everything from using common features and functions found on your Jeep to tips and tricks that makes repairing and maintaining your vehicle easier and common repairs now this is one of those that i bet most of you are going to encounter at some point through the course of your vehicle ownership whether it be with your Jeep or another vehicle whether it's simply driving on the road or when you're off-road and that is well a tire puncture odds are if you are on the trail that's going to come from something like a rock or a sharp stick out on the road could be pretty much anything the example I've got here for you is a nice shiny screw right there between the tread lugs on my trail grapplers now getting a tire puncture doesn't have to be something that stops you in your tracks in fact it can actually be a pretty quick and easy repair to make that is if you're prepared and today I'm going to show you just how to do that there are a lot of different tire puncture repair kits available on the market some are going to come in a nice hard sided case some will come in a soft sided or zipper case really all of them are going to have the same core repair tools in the kits basically you're going to have a reamer that's going to be used to clean out that puncture before we can make the repair we're also going to have an insertion tool that's going to help insert that new tire repair patch into our tire and we're also going to have some tire repair plugs or tire repair cords now beyond that each kit is going to include different tools that are going to be useful in your repair you can see in these kits we've also got some needle nose pliers that are going to be helpful in removing whatever punctured your tire we've got a razor blade in there so we can trim off that repair after we've made it sometimes you'll find a air gauge in here a tire pressure gauge maybe some lubricant that's gonna make the job go a little bit easier for you and in the case of this arb kit we've also got some additional repair items here that could be useful to have when you're far away from assistance like some replacement tire valve stems valve cores even some valve caps and another valve core removal tool in there now if you want to check out our full line of different available tire puncture repair kits you can click that info button to head over to Quadratec.com of course your tire puncture repair kit is really only half of what you're going to need to get the job done especially if you're far off the beaten path away from assistance or without any other help with you well while you're completing that repair and removing whatever just punctured your tire you're going to be losing air so you're going to have to have some way of airing that tire back up that's why it's important to have either something like an onboard air system installed in your Jeep or maybe a power tank with you so that you can inflate that tire when you're completed your repair now this arb repair kit happens to be the one that I've had in my Jeep for quite some time I'll give you a little tip here if you've got a kit that includes some lubricant with it you're going to be keeping it in your Jeep especially during those warm summer months do yourself a favor get a ziploc bag and put that lubricant in there you can put it right back into the case inside the bag it's going to help prevent any unwanted messes inside of that case just ask me how i know now with that being said the first step to go ahead and complete our repair is to start by getting whatever punctured the tire out that's where those needle nose pliers can come in handy or in this case because it's a screw oh good old screw gun all right with that screw removed we can move on to beginning our repair the first thing we need to do is to go ahead and grab the reaming tool so that we can clean out that puncture before we can install the patch now anytime I'm working with sharp objects especially pulling something out of a tire like that it's always where a good pair of heavy duty gloves can come in handy to keep your hands protected go ahead and grab the reamer also grab the lubricant if your kit includes some just put a little bit on the tip of that tool it's going to make it much easier to insert that reamer down through the tire helping to separate the cords of the tire without damaging them while you're cleaning out that puncture you can twist the tool as you're pushing it in and pulling out to help really clean out any debris from that puncture now you can tell by the amount of air we've got coming out of the tire now that we've definitely opened up that puncture cleaned it out of any debris or junk that's in there and the next step is to go ahead and grab our plug insertion tool along with a repair cord we'll go ahead and slip that cord right through the eye of the tool just like we're threading a needle now you just want to make sure you have that tire repair cord so that even amounts of the repair on each side of our insertion tool I'm going to go ahead and put my gloves back on so that we can insert that repair into the tire and now with firm pressure go ahead and insert that repair into the tire go ahead and push that in until the tool bottoms out some of the plugs should still be extending from your tire this point with holding pressure on the collar here we can go ahead in one swift motion pull the tool back out and we should have the plug left there in our tire grab that razor blade included with the kit and now we can come in and trim off any of the extra cord that's left protruding from the tire there now you can see just how quick and easy it is to repair a tire puncture with a puncture repair kit at this point all we've got to do is go ahead and air this tire back up so we can listen for any leaks if we don't hear any at that point you go ahead and carry on underway now it is worth noting that this style repair should only be used as a temporary measure you're going to want to make sure that you get to a tire repair shop as soon as you can to have this tire removed from the wheel so they can inspect it from the inside and maybe complete a professional repair or of course you could always simply relegate this tire to be used as a spare either way you can see just how invaluable it can be to have a tire puncture repair kit with you especially when you're traveling off the beaten path far away from assistance now if you guys have any comments or questions about the tire puncture repair kits i talked about today or how to complete the repair or if you have any ideas for another repair you'd Getting a tire puncture doesn't have to stop you in your tracks. It doesn't matter if it's a nail, a screw or a stick... if you're prepared you can plug your tire in just a few minutes and continue on with your adventure. In this edition of the Quadratec Academy, Rob shows a couple examples of different tire plug kits and the tools they include. Then he demonstrates just how easy it is to use one of the tire repair kits by plugging a tire damaged by a screw. Rob also mentions the importance of having some type of on board air system. Whether it be hard wired to your Jeep, or a portable air compressor or a PowerTank system, you'll need some way to air up a tire after you complete the repair, especially if you're far off the beaten path and away from assistance.
