For just over a week in early February, a patch of high desert in southern California transforms from a sandy deserted wasteland into something a bit, well, more more akin to something you'd find on a college campus.
A party atmosphere, really, filled with adventurous sorts who have descended on the place to demand as much of themselves as of their vehicles. Plus a horde of others who simply want to have a great time while watching some amazing racing.
They call it Hammertown. The home base of around 300 driver teams and more than 35,000 people during King of the Hammers week.
While daily races demand headlines and are a testament of courage, fearlessness and, perhaps, a touch of insanity, Hammertown also serves as a cooling down spot for those participating in the races. Additionally, the place provides time for garage fixes, sounding board sessions and strategy planning.
For those not driving and who just want to observe, the party and noise almost never ends.
And the vehicle scenery almost never does, either.
