Quadratec's Tuesday travels took us to Hey Joe Canyon northwest of Moab for a trail maintenance day with the Federal Bureau of Land Management and Tread Lightly! This area was a former mining location and has unbelievable scenery. However, it is in danger of closing down because of tamarisk growth which restricts trail access, as well as from those choosing to make their own path and hurting the land.
A handful of volunteers, along with BLM and Tread Lightly! reps, spent the morning and early afternoon blocking off multiple access points through a campground/wash area to limit off-trail damage, while also trimming overhanging tamarisk to widen the trail and prevent vehicle damage. Volunteers even installed several fence posts and hooked them together with wire cable to ensure vehicles remained on trail.
