Crown Automotive Rear Liftgate Support Reviews
Perfect fit to replace my original lift gate supports on my 1990 YJ Sahara hard top. Not an exact replacement, though, as the support ball-and-socket connections are secured by a little metal clip instead of a cotter-pin wire like the originals were. Seems to work just as well. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because they come with NO INSTRUCTIONS. Still, it took me 20 only minutes to swap them out and a lot of that time was spent collecting tools. I used: needle nose pliers to remove the original cotter-pin wire holding the old ones in place, small socket wrench because I had to remove the mounting hardware from the Jeep so I could apply enough force to the old supports to pop them off the ball-and-sockets. It took some force and I didn't want to do it while still mounted to the Jeep so I removed the mounts and place them in a vise and banged them off with a rubber mallet. A very small flathead screwdriver is needed to pry the tension clip partly out so you can mount the new support on the ball joint, then you just snap the clip back in to secure it. I put a bit of grease on the ball joints before connecting the supports. All in all pretty easy to do but I've been working on my YJ for 29 years and I'm fairly mechanically astute. I could see some people might accidentally damage something if they were forced to wing it. Why these come with no instructions or diagrams I can only guess. The supports work great, but you do need to replace BOTH of them; a single new one is not strong enough by itself to lift the gate.
