Rhino-Rack 72" x 56" Pioneer Platform with Backbone System & Quick Mount Legs Reviews
This is a well-constructed and sturdy roof rack. I love it. It is low profile and does not have the external structure around the body (I personally am not a big fan of that aesthetic), instead the Backbone puts the supporting structure inside the Freedom Hardtop. Everything goes together relatively quick and the instructions are generally clear. A couple of points. First, the instructions for the quick release legs were unclear which bolts and washers to use to attach the feet to the Backbone castings. I found the pan head Allen screws to be the best, no washers and even these short screws extend too far below the middle castings. If you use both the plain washer and the lock washer then I don’t feel the threads get enough bite. The plain washer only seems the right fit and since the castings have nylon lock nuts imbedded in them I don’t think the lock washer is necessary. Second, the instructions suggest having a beer after installing the Backbone. I suggest having one before you start drilling a dozen holes in your very expensive hardtop, only one beer to take the edge off… no more, you don’t want to get sloppy here!
Now, for a little modification to the installation instructions which say to use the platform factory holes to install the rear leg crossbar and then to drill holes for the middle and front leg crossbars. I personally feel this positions the platform too far forward and blocks too much of the roof opening when the Freedom Panels are removed. I used the factory holes for the front leg crossbar and drilled the middle and rear holes. This shifts the platform to the rear by approximately 3 inches and the back edge of the platform is still within the hardtop roof line.
