AMP Research PowerStep XL Reviews
First off, I am totally impressed with manufacturing and engineering put into this product. Outstanding quality. Bosch drives are a nice touch too; maybe driving a bit of the price as they are very expensive. I agree that the instructions leave a bit to be desired. One glitch in the instructions that I noted was the placement of the rear LED brackets was shown to be on the forward side of the actuator. With the drive motor installed, the bracket interfered with the motor housing. Even in the instruction, the collision is shown!! I'll upload a photo of the interference. I finally gave in, and mounted the rear brackets on the rear side of the mount and all was well. Another note, the box showed up as fitment for a 18-21 Wrangler JL with the sub note (Exc. Diesel). This wasn't a surprise as I crosschecked these on the AMP website before I ordered.
I have a 21 Diesel. I was certain that these would work and that the body and wire harness would be similar enough that a little wire tracing would allow the install.
For the physical installation, I would note that on the Diesel, the frame appears to be larger that the gas model and on the LH side, this became a bit troublesome. Gaining access to tighten the drive motor to the actuator bracket was a challenge for one of the two fasteners. A crows foot wrench and a bit of finesse allowed it to be tightened. For the Diesel, contrary to the directions, you may wish to install and tighten the LH front drive to the assembly prior to bolting to the vehicle.
The only wire difference that I came across for tapping into the door ajar trigger wires was the RR door. The instruction color and the actual color were different. A multi-meter and removing the door harness at the rear door allowed me to trace the correct wire. The steps worked as designed on the first attempt!
In the end, these work absolutely perfectly on my 2021 Diesel and are sturdy as well!! As you'll see in the videos online, they are not Rockrail replacements, but they are certainly an excellent choice for ground clearance. I rated a 5 because of the product quality and design. It is a very challenging installation for the trigger wires. I contemplated removing the passenger seat, but didn't. In hindsight, I would suggest this as well for a little better access to the trigger wire harnesses. If you're mechanical and have a quality set of tools (beyond a socket set and end wrenches), you should be able to get these going in a solid afternoon/evening.
I would have given this a five if not for a couple of issues I had with the installation. Let me first say that the product is rock solid. It appears to be pretty rugged. But, I had two issues with the install that took away from the experience.
First off, the directions could have been way better than they were. For the amount of money I paid for this product, AMP Research could have spent a couple dollars and provided color directions, with actual photographs, instead of sketches.
Second problem was when I finished, the steps were working backwards. When I opened the doors, the steps retracted and they deployed when I closed the doors. I was able to figure out the the wires going to the motors were reversed. Once I changed them, everything worked perfectly. I found out what was wrong by looking on the internet. Apparently, this is not the first time they have had this issue in other vehicles. Again, for the amount of money they want for their product, I don’t think it’s too much to ask for better quality control on their end.
But, as I said, I am very happy with the finished product.
