Reviews for Smittybilt Standard Bucket Seat for 76-06 Jeep CJ, Wrangler YJ, TJ & TJ Unlimited
Seat looks, fits, and sits well
One would think the 4 bolts required would have come with the seat
My old ones were trashed. are the holes metric or something,
When your threaded hole stripped out I ended up using a nut and bolt to hold seat in
Went back to the old seats only after 2 short trips to work. Very uncomfortable, hard and they sit up to high plus the back is to low, edge of the seat digs into the back of my thighs. Don't buy.. I put the my old seats back in with seat covers.
This is the third time I've bought a Smittybilt driver's side seat in about ten years. Why? The seat back is always way too short. I am 5' 10", so I do not consider myself a giant. However, each seat I have ordered after being told that the back is 29" tall from the bottom of the seat has apparently been designed for a twelve year-old boy.
So, I feel like quite the idiot for having bought a third seat and installed it, hoping that it felt better. It doesn't and the back is still much shorter at 26 1/2" to the original passenger seat's 29"--the dimensions I was told on the phone. Both the original seat and the Smittybilt seat were measured the same way, incidentally. IT IS NOT 29" and it never has been. The builders of this seat need to take better measurements of the original seats for a 1984 CJ-7.
They do NOT fit my 2004 TJ Rubicon even with the adapter kit.
I don't understand why these seats have so many great reviews. On the 2 seats, I bought 3 of the mounting brackets broke. They sit high my legs are now pressed against the steering wheel when I drive.
Good luck with your purchase.
These seats are dangerous. I installed them only to find out that they don't extend above the base of my neck. Ended up pulling them out because I was worried my neck would snap if rear ended. No head rest!
I have an '86 CJ7 and these, so called OEM seats, are not. They sit too high, it changes the angle to the pedals, too close to the steering wheel (difficulty on enter and exit) and makes the seat belt too tight. I had to use seat belt extenders, still not right. I wish someone would make a true OEM seat.
Before you order you need to know that these seats sit at least three (3) inches HIGHER than stock. My line of vision is so high now that I have to duck to look under the window frame. I am 5' 10 inches and my eyes are now level with the bottom of the top frame. No idea why they cannot just make these closer Stock seat position and height. They also lean back a bit compared to standard seat angle. Annoying but not terrible. These will also leave you struggling to reach the floor where it angles up from the flat surface. Reaching the pedals is no problem. But its an odd position, sitting so high, especially if your Jeep is lifted. Finally the vinyl is very thin compared to stock/OEM. I would not expect them to last. If you are looking for a quick replacement till you find good seats, these are ok, but honestly you'd be better off spending the money on seat covers for your busted OEM seats, which is sadly now what I wish I had done! There is a reason these are so cheap. Sadly, I had hoped fitment was not one of them. It ain't rocket science. But Smittybilt obviously used a neanderthal when taking measurements for these.
I have a 99 TJ and I bought the seats, which I love, but the brackets are not a good design. The brackets are a must in order to mount them to the original risers. The seat adjustment lever sticks way far forward and is not comfortable between the calves. The seats seat far back on the bracket making them look tacky. The jig also seems to be producing a crooked bracket, because the seats don't slide easily due to the warping of the bracket from the welds. I contacted Smittybilt and got a poor excuse for an answer. "Andraya, The seats only come this way. Unfortunelty there is no solution. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Thank you,
Smittybilt Customer Support Team"
The seats themselves are great! Just be prepared to either re-fab the Smittybilt bracket, or fab something from scratch. I will be modifying the one I already paid for.
