Reviews for Smittybilt Factory Style Reclining Seat for 76-06 Jeep CJ, Wrangler YJ, TJ & TJ Unlimited
The seat itself is a very good match of the original 91 YJ. Much sturdier and more firm, which is nice. The only issue is that it sits about 1-2" higher than the original and is about 1-2" closer to the steering wheel. If there was another set of screw holes 1-2" closer to the front to set the bracket screws into, it would allow the seat to be moved back and give more leg room.
I knew what I was getting into via other reviews (good and bad) when I picked these seats from all the other choices, but I really wanted the factory specs with no need for anything fancy besides reclining. These really are basic at best. They are very firm with no side cradle so driver/passenger bouncy around, almost up and out my half doors if not for the seat belt. I like the height (at least 1.5 inches at the seat from my sagging stock ones). The fabric is taut, somewhat cheap, and scorching after 15 minutes in the sun, so a cover is a must. For "stock" size, there is no room to the left and right to slip my hand in for the crank handle... I really miss my paddle recline. I did have to drill a couple of holes to make the factory seat cradle fit, as the holes did not line up exactly - not a big deal. Do I regret the purchase (was not based on cost)? Yeah... my Jeep is my daily and I love her and keep her stock everything...but this seat option less than middle of the road. Serviceable
nice seat but no lever for reclining which is a real set back ( has turn knobs) if you want quick access to the back from drivers side, but for the budget it's a good seat.
I like the feel of this seat, and it looks great, but the seat of the seat is far too tall. I am 6'1, and while I have a tall torso, I can push my head against the hardtop of my YJ. My eyes were above the top of the windshield. I had to return it because it was just too tall. It was also difficult to get my legs between the seat and the steering wheel.
2000 wrangler seat mechanicals/adjusters are riveted on. Be prepared to grind off the rivets (only 2 of which are accessible) or buy a used adjuster off ebay. Once all that fun is completed the seat works nice but it is definately NOT a direct OE replacement.
These seats are not "factory style" at all. They are 1.5" to 2" higher than factory placing your head too close to the roll bar and your legs too close to the steering wheel. I'm an average height guy at 5' 10" with an average build. This is body dependent of course but they are higher than factory. The seats themselves are nice enough. Response from Smittybilt was "modify your brackets" like everyone out there is a fabricator. My response is "note the fact they are higher in your description". I installed these in a project 1994 YJ a couple months after ordering so can't send them back. I'm just out the money.
