Reviews for Bestop Sailcloth Replace-a-top Soft Top with Half Door Skins & Tinted Windows for 88-95 Jeep Wrangler YJ
Very nice top. Big improvement over original which was in very good shape. I replaced an original black top with a tan sail cloth top with tinted windows. The Jeep is cooler and significantly quieter. I placed the new top in the sun and it installed easy with zero wrinkles. Superb fitment all the way round. I attached a picture.
This top is worth every penny in my opinion
This is a great top for my 1989 YJ. Very tight fit, so I suggest it be installed after letting all pieces soak up some sun at least 75F. Follow the directions and it will snug up tightly inside the retainers. One side of the top with the metal round snaps might still be a pain, but I just place that side of the YJ to face the sun and give it more flexibility.
If that does not work, tape up the jaws to some vise-grips and get that extra 1/8" you might need.
Putting this top up in cool weather is nearly impossible due to fabric shrinkage. If you have access to a heated garage, you're in luck. If not, I usually put the top up for the fall and winter in late September or at least by mid-October. I live in the west part of Central Virginia near the Blue Ridge and seasons can change almost overnight.
The tinted windows are great. Another tip: use some rawhide boot laces to loop through the holes in the zipper sliders and get more leverage to pull up/down. Spray silicone lube on the zippers if they start to bind a bit. Excellent top if it is treated with care.
I've got a 1995 Wrangler (actually 1994 but sold in 1995 before the new design came out in '96). I've replaced the original top once about 12 years ago, and while the top itself was still in great condition, the windows were scratched and getting hazy. I bought replacement windows a few times but thought I'd just get a whole new top. I left it sit out in the So California sun for a few hours so it would be nice and pliable. Man, is this a tight fit. Somehow it seems the zipper configuration was a bit different on the rear window, but I got it hooked up. Lots of swearing and frustration trying to get the thing on (and promising to myself never to take the top off for the summer again, haha), but in the end, it sat on my jeep like a shiny new crown on a king. Now, it was time to put the door skins on. I lined them up and they were just a bit off... off enough that if I pulled on one side, the other side didn't line up. Frustrated beyond belief, I let them sit an extra hour and a half in the sun. That still didn't help. I emailed Quadratec and explained the situation. I got a prompt reply once the work week started (I was putting the top on the jeep on a Sunday) and they said they'd contact Bestop and before you knew it, I had 2 replacements delivered to me and they fit like an Armani suit. Thank you Quadratec for the spot-on awesome customer service! I want to add that I bought this top around March or April of this past year and it sat in the box in my garage until I put it on towards the end of September. I was concerned that perhaps the window of opportunity to right the wrong had expired, but Quadratec came through with flying colors. With the new top, a shine and some tire black, my jeep looks like it just came off the dealer floor! (I still don't think I'll take the top off next summer, though! Stay tuned!)
I'd like to point out that the Paula girl on the reviews must have not got the right top because bestop is the original soft top that is sold with jeeps from the factory so there is no way that it wouldn't fit unless you bought the quick snap bestop or a different model jeep wrangler or different gen jeep wrangler. Don't listen to what this woman says if you know anything about jeeps. Bestop still makes the greatest soft tops for jeeps.
Awesome top, really fits well and looks great. The corners of the half doors started fraying pretty quickly. I take the windows on and off every day, but maybe Bestop should reinforce those corners.
I have used Bestop for many years with great results. This one is a real disappointment. Even when installed in warm weather, the door skins have a big gap at the bottom. The Velcro closures do not fit around the frame. Nice and drafty! As for the top, no matter what, I cannot get one of the rear window zippers to zip. Pretty bummed out.
Terrible. I bought a Bestop under advisement from other Jeep owners I know. I'm not sure if it's this particular style, or the year of my Jeep that isn't compatible, but the snaps don't fit, the tubing for the back window insert is the wrong size, and no matter what I do I can't get it to stretch out. My passenger side just hangs there, blowing in the breeze, and freezing me to death in the cold weather. I'm not sure why this is marketed towards the 95 Wrangler when it doesn't fit. Extremely disappointed. I won't be purchasing another Bestop top in the future.
