Reviews for Superlift Superide 1.5" Lift Kit for 87-95 Jeep Wrangler YJ
Best buy in years
This kit was perfect for my 88 YJ. I had sagging, warped leafs and the new springs lifted my jeep, gave it a better ride and stronger stance. Superlift also has amazing customer service. I lost a bushing, gave them a call and they sent me a whole new set of bushings in 2 days. You may need to drop your transfer case as well, I'm getting some shaking from the driveline now that it's been lifted but the kit comes with spacers and new hardware for a t-case drop.
I'm very satisfied with these springs. They're obviously much heavier duty than the original factory springs, but I'm a bit disappointed they didn't come with replacement nuts/bolts to tie into the shackles. Not a big deal, I ran to the hardware store and bought new grade 8 hardware, but it was a minor hassle. I much prefer brand new hardware if I'm putting in everything else brand new. Due to my original 1995 era factory springs being a bit worn and saggy, I ended up with an effective lift of anywhere from 3" to 3.5" depending on where measured on the body.
Good kit to ride on and off road, and give to your YJ a fresh look
Installed, way more bumpy then before. The bolt on the bottom, middle of the left is about two sizes to large, had to grind it down to fit, would look elsewhere.
I don't often write reviews, but feel that this product warrants some warnings to potential buyers. Let me first say that the hardware seem very sturdy. The quality of the springs is nice and they do ride better than my old worn out YJ springs. Now for the warning: This springs did not bolt in as advertised in my 1995 bone stock YJ. The center bolts were .030" too big in diameter, and the nut that holds the center bot in was about .125" too big to fit through the spring plate. The nut was an easy fix with a bench grinder to round over the points on the hex nut. The center bolt can be ground down to fit, but this is a precision part that needs to fit tight so should actually be turned down with a lathe. If you aren't lucky enough to own a lathe, you will need to pay a machinist to fix this issue. Or swap on factory original center bolts from the old springs if they don't snap off...
Finally the springs move the rear axle forward about 1 inch. I was shocked that a small lift would have this much movement, the driveshaft should have enough adjustment in it to leave the axle where it belongs.. I bought such a small lift to stay as close to stock as possible, while gaining clearance to fit 31" tires. I wasn't happy with the new location of rear tires. The front didn't bother me much.
Overall a good lift, but I believe it isn't advertised correctly. It is advertised as maintaining stock geometry, but it simply does not. Transfer case needs to be dropped because of lack of degree shims in the rear. Also degree shims in the front change the castor angle too much in my opinion.
Let me start by saying on the whole I'm satisfied with how this turned out. However I have some issues with this kit. First it was incomplete was missing one set either front or back shackle bushings. Fortunately the shackle kit I was simultaneously installing was complete so I was still able to install. Second all 4 of the spring centering pins were considerably oversize by no less than .040 inches, yes that's forty thousandths. I am a machinist and have a lathe on hand so other than having to take the springs apart to get the pins out and turn them down to fit the holes in the spring perch on the axle this wasn't a big deal for me but did add about an hour to install and there is no reason for the pins to have been so much larger in my opinion. Third, the front springs come with pinon angle shims which is good, except they are narrower than the springs and are made of aluminum so long term if you live in the salt belt you can expect galvanic corrosion. I will be replacing these with steel in the near future wish I would have known this before buying. Ride quality is acceptable however the springs combined with the crown HD shackles gave enough lift that the track bars are a good way from being long enough so they are currently not installed, nor is the sway bar which is no big deal for me but may be for you if you drive your Jeep on the road. Also I did not install the supplied tcase lowering brackets. I had a slip yoke eliminator and new rear driveshaft ready to go for this install so no comment on the fit of the drop brackets. Over all I would not recommend this kit unless you have the tools and knowledge to overcome the potential fitment issues I have listed here.
