Reviews for Smittybilt 2843 SRC HD Pivot Rear Tire Carrier for 07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK
Is the ability to hold a 37" tire without being overpriced
Very happy with purchase!
Very solid.....no sagging of the tailgate and realigned perfectly.....good instructions and easy to install...
I've installed two of these Smittybilt Tire Carriers. Simple to install, heavy duty construction well worth the money and reliability and support of the rear tire.
Need extend torx bit for mounting, the standard torx bit doesn't give you clearance for your rachet head from scratching the mount. Also check the wheel studs for blanks when you unpack the box. I had to drive around up north for the long weekend without a spare tire as I started the installation only to realize the stud had no splines for pressing into plate and had to wait for a replacement.
Instructions weren’t great but still easy to figure out. I have 35/12.50s On factory rubicon wheels and had to use an adapter to mount the tire to the carrier.
Would have got 5 stars if not for very bad instruction manual. Good product. Easy to install with hand tools. My wife and I did it in 4 hours, but we took our time and watched lots of videos and kept reading instructions over and over. About one hour was trying figure out what to do with the spacers and rubber pads that come in the box but are not mentioned anywhere in the terrible instruction manual. Another half hour was searching for factory torque specs which some areas of the instructions tell you to use but do not give you the torque number, yet they do give you torque numbers for their own bolts. Called Smittybilt and spoke to a tech who sent me a chart that was absolutely useless. Followup eamils to the same address went unanswered. Finally found factory torque specs on an unrelated website. Product is great. Instructions are unbeleiveably bad. With all the reviews mentioning the bad instructions you would think Smittybilt would have remedied that by now.
Well made product that does what it's supposed to once it's actually installed. The actual directions that come with the carrier are absolutely terrible. There are even 4 gaskets and spacers included that are not even listed as parts that come with the product. Not too mention there are no color diagrams and the poor black and white diagrams omit a huge number of actual steps that need to be taken to get this carrier installed. Unbelievable that a well made product comes with such horrendous instructions. To my knowledge, Smittybilt has no online video installation videos for this product either.
Wasn't a bad install, the instructions were lacking at best. That's about the only problem I had.
Functionally it’s a great product but assembly design is poor. Directions aren’t spectacular either. A couple of exploded diagrams would be helpful. Since it is adjustable expect to disassemble and reassemble parts as you fit up your wheel tire combo. I have 37s and did this by myself so this got a bit tiring. I think a few weldnuts would make that part quicker. I was on par with the estimated assembly time with power tool use. That’s including time to redo parts again to get the third brake light on and also adjusted to the right height. Again, once you get past the assembly it’s a great product.
