It would not go on with the metal retainer inside the knob. So I pulled out the metal retainer, slid the retainer over the shaft first, then pressed the knob on. Worked great. This was for my 1997 TJ.

Great, more sturdy and WAY better quality than the factory one that broke. Seems a tad smaller than factory, but looks and works perfect.
Needed a little WD-40 first to really push it on, as it's difficult at first to push in.
