Reviews for Quadratec QRC Rear Bumper with Tire Carrier for 87-06 Jeep Wrangler YJ, TJ & Unlimited
Tubular design plus solves my oversized spare tire problem.
I like the type of bumper that it comes with, yet will solve my problem with the oversized spare tire I have on the Jeep
Great addition to my YJ. Install isn’t easy but the directions were helpful.
Love the bumper now that the installation is finally over. Instructions were not clear about which bolts to use were. I’ll bet someone had a good laugh when they wrote the part about putting those bolts in behind the fuel tank.
So far the fit and function of the bumper and tire carrier are great. My biggest complaint are the bolts supplied. How hard is it to supply the CORRECT parts. The two bolts that tighten tire carrier to the pivot point are both too short. Then the bolts and nuts for the supplied tire carrier were different thread patterns. Since I had already pulled everything apart this meant having to make a trip to the store to buy the correct parts.
I just installed this bumper with tire carrier. First off the quality of the bumper seems very good, heavy duty. I mounted my spare tire on the carrier and there is NO sagging or alignment problem when opening of closing the carrier. Now the problems, 1) the kit was missing bolts and nuts, 2) the instructions say that drilling only required on TJ jeeps, I have an 88 YJ and had to drill two inner holes on each side to mount the bumper( not a big deal), 3) the two mounting points on the underside of the bumper dont align enough to allow insertion of the bolt so I will have to open the thru holes up.
This bumper and tire carrier are sturdy and look great. However, there are a couple of notable issues that make me not want to recommend them to others. The biggest problem is that the tire carrier does not stay latched. Even with the latch lock in place, an off-camber bump causes just enough flex for the carrier to hop over the retainer. I then have to pull off to reset it once I notice my spare tire swinging out into traffic. Additionally, the carrier rattles. A lot. Because the carrier has some free play that doesn't appear to be adjustable, the latch rattles against the retainer with every small bump. Although this doesn't affect the function, it is seriously annoying. Lastly, the system is not expandable. There are no means provided for attaching any other brackets, carriers, or third brake light. Overall, this is an attractive setup with serious issues.
Was lucky my 33" Mickey Thompson Baja Claw TTC spare didn't fly off and hit a vehicle behind me. The spare tire bumper and carrier says it will hold a 36" tire, no it won't. The spare tire mount cracked and tore down the vertical beams from moderate off road use. I can't figure out how to attach a photo, but the welds and steel broke and tore down both sides of the carrier where the spare mounts to the vertical beams on the carrier. Live and learn, the $1234.91 for the Warn is far less than the cost of damage if the tire broke off and hit a vehicle behind me. Quadratec should reconsider selling this cheap steel.
