Reviews for Rock Hard 4X4 Rear Bumper in Black for 07-18 Jeep Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited
Aluminum makes it light weight and rust free. Bumper looks and fits great. Came with spare tire relocation mount to raise spare tire to clear bumper. Very pleased with the quality of Rock Hard bumpers.
I purchased this bumper after my son purchased one for his TJ years ago and was very happy with it. One improvement over the TJ bumper was the ability to adjust the tire height. My son actually came down hard on a rock once because of the lower tire on the earlier model. It does weigh a little more than your average bumper but the body protection it gives your Jeep is worth it. Installed a 3rd brake light under the back tire rim and zip tied the wires to the bumper around the pin. Wasn't fond of the bolts for the Rotopax holders, so I spray painted them black.
like it just a long time on come in don't be in a hurry
I have this bumper on a 2007 2 door Rubicon. It was on the vehicle when I bought it, but I've installed and removed it, rebuilt the hardware, and refinished the coating so I am very familiar with it in detail. I wanted to share my experience for anyone considering this bumper.
The TL:DR version is that this is an outstanding bumper with a company that really stands behind their product.
Pros:
-Looks great
-1/4" plate is virtually indestructible.
-Finish held up well over 8-10 year period while my the finish on my AEV front bumper totally disintegrated and came off in huge flakes
-Company support was outstanding and sent me a full a rebuild kit free of charge. This was basically no questions asked on an 8-10 year old bumper. The only thing I had to do was email them a photo so that they could verify the kit I needed.
-D-Ring mounts are very beefy and well placed
-Built in 2" receiver is a nice feature
Cons:
-Extremely heavy. If weight is a concern, 1/4" steel plate isn't for you!
-The tire mount closing mechanism is a little finicky. You have to close it pretty hard to compress the rubber stop bumper enough that the "double action" latch secures properly. If you don't, it will still latch fine, but will rattle. Think of it like a car door which can still be latched even though it's not completely closed.
-The spare tire mount is quite high. Mine is an older model so they may have changed this now. On mine i cut the tire mount off, rotated it 180 deg, then rewelded it. This lowered the tire by about 4". Before doing this, the rear view mirror was totally useless with my 35" BFG back there. I'll post a photo, steel blue JK with 35's. This may interfere with the hi-lift jack mounting, but I don't use that feature so I can't say for sure.
This thing weighs a ton, but I think the whole Jeep could be crushed without hurting the bumper. The finish on this bumper was still in great shape after 8-10 years and only required minor prep work. There was minor surface rust here and there, nothing deep, and the coating was well adhered. This is in contrast the same age AEV front bumper where the entire coating came off in giant chunks using nothing but a flat screwdriver with heavy rust underneath.
When this was refinished I called Rock Hard to buy a new latch and rubber stop for the spare tire mount mechanism. They answered the phone immediately then informed me that they would send me a full rebuild kit (including bearings for the swing arm and other parts I didn't need) TOTALLY FOR FREE because the bumper had a lifetime warranty and they stand behind their product. This was no questions asked and the parts bag arrived 2 days later. Compare this to AEV who couldn't even GET the some of the parts I needed, whose bumper finish totally disintegrated, and who charged me $80 for two plastic covers.
I'll upload some photos of my final rebuild. I would highly recommend this bumper to anyone who wants the ultimate in strength and is willing to accept the high weight.
I have the aluminum model, lightweight and it gives full corner protection.
Excellent clearance with the receiver mounted high. Other Jeepers like the look. Made in USA!
Solid construction and powdercoat is standing up to FL sun heat and salt. Follow the install directions and you will be great
Could not be more please with Rock Hard products, rear bumper can carry a lot of weight.
Looks great but adds a lot of weight. Expect to eat through shocks if you're still stock height.
Agree with John S. that the bumpers rust. Even got an after market powder coating, they still rusted up. I bought them for the 1/4" steel as well as the style. Wish I bought the aluminum ones now.
