97' Wrangler w/soft top. Does the storage compartment need to be temporarily moved to get at the soft top latches?
No. For ’87-’06 Wrangler YJ & TJ models, install the Console at least 5” away from the windshield frame’s interior edge to allow complete operation of sun-visors and top latches. Thanks for your inquiry.
Are the two storage boxes connected in the middle to accommodate a long item such as a two piece fishing rod.
They are separate compartments no pass through between them.

Yes, sun visors can still be used
Does this work with a 2011 jk with the freedom top?
Yes, however for JK hardtop applications, it is necessary to temporarily remove the Freedom Panels to install the Overhead Console.
