Reviews for Tuffy 137-01 Security Products Hood Lock for 97-06 Jeep Wrangler TJ & Unlimited
Had to,modify tu use on my 2004 tj
The quality is there but the fit isn't. I attempted to install this on my 1998 Jeep Wrangler Sport TJ. The instructions are easy to follow and there is some adjustment for the fit but the hood latch could not clear the lock core even when adjusted all the way out. I was never able to test it because I was never able to install it.
The idea of this product to protect the valuable upgrades under the hood is great, but application was difficult as the small washers, nuts and bolts required for application were hard to reach with tools required to align and tighten the lock in place. Once finally installed (after dropping the nut and washer a few times) then I could not open the hood in the "unlocked" position. The hood latch was getting caught on the Hood Lock no matter what I did. Not to mention that there was not a lot of room to turn the key to the lock/unlock position within the grill opening. The small amount of allowable adjustment on the hood lock just did not allow for proper use. Not to mention, if you want to put decorative slats or mesh in the grill, the key hole will not be accessible. Now is the kicker, If I wanted to return the item from my location, it would cost me just under what I paid for the product. So I decided to keep it and give it out as a gag gift to one of my Wrangler brothers for Christmas. Maybe the stars will align and they will have more luck with installing and using this item than what I did.
It just doesn’t fit correctly in my 2006 TJUR. Had to grind the key to get it around the grill slot. Striker/latch still rubs the locking mechanism. When pressing the latch it has to be timed correctly or the hood won’t open (feature or defect??). It’s still difficult to unlock even with the key significantly thinned down. I’ll have to find a different solution and give this one to someone that can use it.
Let’s face it: Wranglers are not built to particularly tight tolerances, and I feel for any aftermarket supplier that has to make parts that fit in all cases. That being said, in order to make a ‘no drill’ hood lock, Tuffy has created the part from hell. Frankly, anyone that can’t drill two holes probably shouldn’t be owning a Wrangler anyway. There was simply no way that it was going to both allow clearance for the key to turn AND lock the latch on my LJ. I tried bending it, shimming it, trimming it, grinding it, opening-up the slotted hole, etc, and there was just no way. After literally hours of frustration, I’m returning this, and I HATE returning things. Tuffy needs to redesign this. I suppose that for the lucky TJ/LJ owners where this bolts right-on, it is a barely acceptable product, although in my travails, I did figure how to circumvent the locking mechanism fairly easily. I’m really disappointed in Tuffy, because I’ve owned lots of other Tuffy products that I quite liked.
BTW, in case you are thinking this could be a case of operator error, I am a mechanical engineer with industrial product design experience, and quite handy with a wrench.
This is a horrible product! Don't waste your money. It doesn't work, hard to fit and almost impossible to install with the provided directions.
Horrible. Did not fit well at all. I returned it.
This product just would not fit my 2005 Jeep Wrangler (TJ). The lock assemble itself was in the wrong place and closing the hood put the hood catch rubbing against my hood latch. Normally the tailpiece or cam of the lock would engage the hood latch. I couldn't find a work around to make it work., short of moving the hood latch from its original location on the hood. Wasn't going to do that. I wish Bolt by Strat-Tech would make one to fit the TJ. I have one on my 2014 JKU and it works great
