Reviews for Derale Performance 20162Q Waterproof Electric Cooling Fan for 87-06 Jeep Wrangler YJ, TJ & TJ Unlimited
I have a black (sun absorbing) 2004 Jeep Wrangler and I live in Alabama, 97 degrees today. I'm very pleased with the fan. My Jeep temp ran above 210, maybe up to 212 or 214 on a hot day at idle. I installed the fan and a lower thermostat and now my Jeep runs cooler, below 210. It also helped my air conditioning especially at idle. Quick install notes to help someone: Do not install a fuse on the orange wire even if your instructions show to do so. A call for support confirmed that I had old install instructions. For my 2004 the green wire goes to a blue and black strip wire on the center of the firewall where the wire harness connects. Confirm this with a test light before making the connection. FAN WORKS GREAT!
Very pleased with the quality of this fan system. The fit was perfect, albeit a little tight, but the results live up to the price. Time will tell about the longevity of the parts but so far I am happy!
I live in Arizona so I updated my cooling system to handle the high heat in the desert while of road. The Derale Performance 20162Q Waterproof Electric Cooling fan was added to the Mishimoto performance radiator and Flowkooler high volume water pump. The only thing that needs to be corrected is the correct screws for mounting the radiator. I took out on a long run last week and it worked flawlessly.
Great fan love it but would make it easier if you got an updated version of the instructions. Instructions that came with it was for a fuse to be in the system but what i got was a circuit breaker. I looked the instructions up on derales actual website and made so much more sense.
I am in Florida and the OEM cooling fan didn't work well when putting around in the woods in the summer time. I installed this kit about 1 1/2 years ago and it works great for the most part. I had to modify the temperature sensor; (2.5L) with insulating tape. Without the insulation the fan cycled on and off every few seconds. My only complaint... The fan relay only lasts 2-3 months before it burns out and has to be replaced. Derale techs said it was a grounding issue but I have since grounded directly to the battery and the problem was not solved. Just replaced the relay for the ??? time yesterday which prompted me to write this review.
at first i really liked this. clean install, my temp never got much above 200. down side, the thermal switch, cycles to fan a lot, and because of that, my fan failed, and my jeep overheated. not bad but not good either. quadratec, is sending me another kit, and i should be back up and running soon. going to look into a different thermal switch, i think that keeping the fan from constantly cycling on and off, will help it last longer. once i have a fix i will update
did not cool in hi heat area
many electrical problems over a couple years resulting in overheating. do not trust this product... went back to stock.
cost a lot did not fit my 4.0 1991 YJ .. after we mad some changes and many trips to the store we got it to work >> but it did NOT fix the cooling problem.. went back to the stock fan EVERY thing works now and runs about 200 waste of money!!!
I did not have a good experience with this fan. It was extremely loud (not useful in fast food drive-thru). I was close to installing a shut-off switch to fix that, or getting a 2-stage fan. I also had consistent issues with the temp relay. The fan would correctly stay off until the engine warmed up, but once it was close to the operating temp, it would turn on and cut off and turn on like 40 or so times before finally it was warm enough to stay on. Once on, it would maintain a stable operating temp and was certainly strong enough to perform in 100 degree heat. I also could notice additional engine power when operating cold and the fan was off. After a couple years of use and maybe 2k miles, it stopped working and my Jeep overheated. I no longer trusted this product and re-installed the mechanical fan. We spend money on our Jeeps to make them bullet-proof. This is a worry that I just didn't need out on the trails.
