Reviews for Tuffy 173-01 Security Products Security Deck Enclosure for 07-10 Jeep Wrangler JK
Better than I expected. No rattles or squeaks and does serve its intended purpose well. Very well built product. A must have if you are going to do any top off traveling in your Jeep.
I installed this in my 2-door JK. As usual, Tuffy provides a well-done product that does its job. Strongly built, it provides the secure storage it claims to provide. A couple of hours to install, given all the bits and pieces, but nothing difficult. If you are considering this product, you need to know it provides secure (reasonably so) storage, but it is most definitely NOT weather tight. Numerous gaps... to many to give a complete accounting, but the big ones are around the woofer, and at top and bottom corners of the front. You need to protect items stored with either your top or by putting items in dry bags inside the box. It'll keep light rain out, but that is about all you can expect. The "weather stripping" on the unit are more for noise control, I suspect, than weather sealing. Not that noise control is a bad thing, but it is definitely not water tight by a long shot. As with all Tuffy products (by my experience, and I have purchased several over the years), the manufacturing is more garage metal shop than it is polished, but it looks good when installed and does the job. I've rated it 5 stars because it does what it claims to do. If weather tight or polish are among your requirements, you'll be disappointed. If ruggedly made secure storage is what you want, this will do the job in spades.
Excellent product. I've had this storage unit in my JK for about 2 years and I would say that it is clearly the best after-market item I've ever purchased. Solid. Well built, no 'squeeks' or rattles.Installed easily and is easily removable. It takes the place of my back seat and creates a lot of extra (and secure) (and out of sight) storage space. I rarely have the back seat in my 2dr JK, I can take this unit out & put in the back seat in less than 20 minutes. It takes about the same to re-install. Overall reasonably easy, It is about 80% water tight with only a few areas that light can shine through, so in a light rain it keeps items stored dry. Although nothing is 100% secure, this discourages and makes it difficult if anyone tried to break into it. The shear appearance is discouragement enough. Tailgate door locks the space when closed (and locked) I installed tie-down hooks on the top, so that I can place other items on top of the shelf when I travel or need even more space. Overall a fantastic use of space and very secure! Well worth the money.
Once installed, it does what it is supposed to do. Instructions are inadequate. I had to add lots of extra weather stripping and padding as this thing squeaked like crazy for the first month. Took me a while to identify all the squeak points and put buffers in place. Now, it is totally quiet.
This product is very sturdy and secure. The only issue is the lid. It is very hard to slide in place and ours was not able to close properly with the side trays in. If you are going to be buying a 500 product, you will want to use everything. Sadly we can not use the side trays. Like the other reviews it is not watertight. It's a good product, but the lid needs to be redesigned.
Be careful if using this with soft top rolled down/no top. A reasonably strong thief can bend the metal deck. This just happened to me and the thief stole some items that were in the "trunk" space. The deck was bent upwards. No obvious marks indicating a prybar. I think the thief stood on top of the deck and pulled the tailgate edge hard enough for the metal to bend upward, allowing him to access the space.
