Reviews for MasterTop Fastback Soft Top for 18-23 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited
This is a great top, but it’s not for everyone. You give up the easy to put it down like the factory soft top, but you gain minimal hardware, multiple positions it can be in, and it takes up a lot less space when folded back. Another plus is I replaced the 4 back bolts with thumb screws so I can take the entire top off or put it back on without tools. It’s exactly what I was looking for in a soft top when I take off my winter top.
To install, you have to make sure all fasteners are loose so you can make adjustments for the initial installation. Once installed and you tighten everything, the fit is great. The top is also quieter than other soft top Jeeps I’ve been in, perhaps because I took the time to make sure everything was aligned before I tightened everything.
My top came with incorrect door surround knobs and three of the brackets were bad. I didn’t take off a star because when I called Mastertop, a person who was friendly answered the phone and sent me replacement parts via FedEx.
This Matertop soft top is soooo much better than the Bestop. It doesn't require a bunch of clunky hardware in the back nor does it look like a a bulky sleeping bag sitting on the back of my Jeep like the Bestop ---> and it is half the price. The quality is great and for an extra $100 it is worth the upgrade to the MasterTwill. For the review that says days to install I have a question. "Do you know what an allen wrench is? :-). I am somewhat handy and it took me about 2 hours to install with help from a friend. You definitely need an extra set of hands for some of it and to help line things up.
Using the top:
It is super easy to open up the sunroof to uncover most of the front seat. It works the same as unlatching the freedom panels and then just pushing it up. Uncovering both rows of seating takes about 1 minute to unhook the spring loaded knobs and reposition them to the back. What's nice about this positioning is you can still easily access the back of the jeep without the top getting in the way. It is a great design!
Had several missing connectors and installation was quite time consuming, but the end result is worth it.
I really wanted to like this top, and I do for its functionality. My Jeep had a hard top, and this soft top is great for being able to leave the house with an open top but button up should rain come.
However, there are major problems that make the top almost unusable for me here in FL, a state that gets a lot of rain. But I’ll get to the leaks after I talk about the fit.
Like other brand tops I’ve had, the sides are held in place with plastic slides. Since my top is about an inch long, the clips slide out and the side panels start flapping when I’m driving I’ve 45 mph. Especially a problem on a highway, and an even greater problem if it’s raining.
Which brings me back to the leaks.
While parked, water gets from the channel into the roll bar area. I’m afraid of what might be going on with water intrusion into my roll bar. You’d think with hand knobs, it would be a simple thing to unscrew them and check it out. But like other reviews mention, you can’t believe what a pain it is to try to use them.the nut doesn’t quite seem to be tapped correctly, and those ‘hand’ knobs are anything but easy to manipulate.
As mentioned, the theoretical function of this top would be great, if it weren’t for the execution of the product. But I do r want to theoretically use it, and I didn’t pay theoretical money for it.
It was one of the lowest cost tops, but the roughly $1000 price tag is still a major purchase for some of us, and I had to save up for a long time before I could pull the trigger.
So there you go- I have a love-hate relationship with this thing.
Biggest issue is fitting, especially the front two side attachments. The plastic hinges are not lined up properly and it is nearly impossible to get the threads to start. Take it back off the Jeep and you can run the bolts in by hand. I loosened everything but still impossible to get the threads started. After a couple weeks installed I have no found a leak on the passenger side. Had to return the first one arrived with a chaffed hole front center. Just bad packaging nothing more.
The good - I do not have the flapping at speed up to 70 mph on the highway and tight as a drum. Quieter than my old Besttop by far!!
I really wanted to like this. In the pictures, I liked how the top folded all the way back, as compared to similar offerings. Reality was much different upon arrival and installation.
Basically, the quality of this top is inferior. On one of the back windows, the velcro was already separating from the window. On the other back window, the stitching had come lose. Then, the pin that is used on the top to flip it back broke after one use! Can someone say "quality control"?
I've bought other after market tops from the other major competitor in the past with zero problems. My advice, stick with either the Mopar OEM tops or the "best tops" on the market.
To Quadratec's credit, they refunded me fully after I packaged it back up and sent it back. I had a few other problems with this order (due to FedEx), and Quadratec customer service was awesome. As I continue to modify my 2018 Jeep JLU, I will continue to source my upgrades via Quadratec. They deserve 5-stars. Master Top, zero stars.
If zero stars was an option, I would put it. 2-3 hour installation time is an absolute joke. A more appropriate time frame would be 2-3 DAYS. The instructions are simply useless. You would be better off winging it than attempting to follow a picture book of nonsense. Make sure you check from the start that they actually included all the hardware. Otherwise, you will end up like me. FOUR trips to the hardware store because 3 different sets of screws and the nuts were missing. The entire process took us 2 full days of fighting with the worlds most difficult soft top. It was a constant back and forth of putting a piece on, and then realizing its wrong thanks to the impossible directions and starting back at square one. I haven't even taken it for a spin, so I can't speak to its performance just yet. But if the installation and other reviews ring true, I am sure it will be another nightmare. I would return this if I could, but I fear the complication of disassembling and then repackaging this roof would destroy me. There's only couple hundred dollar difference between this roof and the Bestop or even Quadratech branded models. Spend the money, save your sanity.
I bought this top a month, this is a really disappointing roof compared to the old Besttop. So many things are bad on this, I dont even know where to start. The noise is terrible when the roof is fully on, the three bars do not secure tightly so they vibrate non stop. When you fold open the roof sections, it creates tremendous flap noises from the rear. Its as if they did not try this themselves, I have tried doing the normal tricks (add velcro, etc) but nothing has helped. The plastic quick release knobs have already broken off, and it was a huge pain to get this thing on the first place. I am on my third jeep, have had numerous tops, this is by the worst I have had. Having 3 bars also makes it very difficult to get this one and off. The only position this roof seems to work well is when it is fully rolled back.
