Reviews for GP Factor License Plate Relocation Kit for 18-20 Jeep Wrangler JL
Easy to install.
The look and functionality
Worked as designed! Looks great with the new Bumper. Very easy installed. Just one thing put a piece of Velcro on the back of the license plate before you install it so I won’t make noise when you close the tailgate or on the trail. It does mean you need more tools with you when you go off road if you need your spare tire. Better than putting it on the bumper just to get ripped off.
No issues with install on 2020 JLU. Install was quick and simple. Works exactly as expected.
Works as designed but a bit of a nightmare to install if you’re expecting it to just plug right in. Camera wire was not long enough and had to be redirected from tire carrier, when running plate light, just go through your two grommets (above the rear passenger tail light and on the back of the gate). RUN THE PLATE LIGHT BEFORE PUTTING ANYTHING BACK TOGETHER!! Camera housing doesn’t always just fall out. It may take some muscle or a placement tap with a wrench to get it loose. Lastly, the plate light did not fit directly into the intended slot. Had to bend it open and bend it closed. The product seems to be a good product but deducting two stars for the difficulty I had. It wasn’t as quick as intended. I will post pictures of where I ran the wires.
Package seems complete but obviously a return as the previous buyer's personal information was still in the box I received. No instructions came with purchase. (Not sure if that was because of the previous customer or if GP Factor doesn't include instructions). Quadratec does have an online video to review on the install, but I have two complaints about the video. First, the camera assembly didn't come out as easily as shown on the video. Took me almost an hour to figure that the camera assembly and lug housing are two separate parts, since it wasn't clearly shown on the video. (Clearly the Quadratec team had practiced since the camera/lug housing came loose as soon as the bolts where undone.) Second, and more importantly, the video glossed over how to wire the led plate light to the vehicle. That was the more challenging part of the install, especially since the video had a throw-away line like "just wire the light through your Jeep to the tail light." (Kind of like..."now, remove the patient's heart...") Everything else was a simply straightforward unbolt, disconnect, reconnect and bolt on.
Looks great mounted and great quality. If you’re looking at changing the look this is it. 2 stars because of the practicality of it is not good. If you’re ever going to change your tire it’ll be a nightmare. I didn’t wait that long after a week I went another route. Seeing that I knew i didn’t like the design I never changed up the wiring. Great product for the non off-roading person or the person that works on there own rig.
Hole pattern for the offset lugs is wrong. I had to mill them into ovals to make it work. Also, you will need to disconnect the camera if you have to remove the spare tire. Not well thought out..
So this get's (1) star for lack of thought on usability and difficulty to make it correct. The hardware and plate holder is itself of good quality. For the cost of this holder it is a total disappointment. Don't be fooled by the installation instructions, much has to be done if you want this set-up correct. The difficult part is getting the wiring (connectors) to be functional or you will need to cut wires if you have to change the tire. My wheels are solid so the connectors WILL NOT go through the wheel. How I solved this issue was to cut a large hole under the tire mount that the camera is housed in, I made it big enough so that the connectors can pass through. In the event you need the rear tire you can now disconnect the wiring without cutting it. If you are not handy and you want this done correctly set aside a couple of hours and have the correct tools to modify the tire mount. In the end I have it exactly how I wanted it but I also put quite a bit of time into getting it right and clean.
Great product and design, UNTIL you have to change a tire. In order to do so, you have to disconnect the backup camera, but that disconnect is at the camera, which you can't get to unless you remove the license plate AND the backup camera hood. I ended up cutting out a small portion from the license plate, in order to get a screwdriver into the camera. I also didn't want to fool around with the backup camera hood screws, so I simply used duct tape to tape it on. A better design would be for the manufacturer to provide a small 'connector' wire, moving the disconnect away from the camera, similar to how the third tail light and license plate lights disconnect.
Whenever I had a flat tire, out on a trail, I didn't have a small screwdriver to unscrew the hood, so I simply cut that wire.
