Reviews for MasterTop SkyMaster® Frameless Fastback Soft Top for 97-06 Jeep Wrangler TJ
I saw a couple not so good reviews but decided to get it. I bought the Master Twill option and absolutely love it. It fits very tight.
The top deck went on very easy though one step in the instructions was confusing. Both the picture and verbiage said to put the over the door now onto the front and slide in all the way - pretty straight forward, but then instructed to drill a hole in both sides of the mount. Problem is, there was only one screw for each side so, I only drilled the hole in from the outside.
Other than that, the instructions were straight forward.
I let the quarter windows and rear window sit in the sun for a couple hours before putting them on. Even after that, they were still very tight and difficult to attach. Once done, everything is completely tight with no sags or wrinkles.
I love the fabric and it looks fantastic, I couldn't be more pleased.
I put a Trek Top Pro on a JK but love this top so much better.
Amazing top! I've had a Bestop TrekTop for years and always liked the frameless look with flip back front. It finally wore out and I need a new one. Decide to try the MasterTop instead of just replacing TrekTop due to price and 2 features I was intrigued about. 1at the price was several hundred dollarscheaper and after having for 6 months, I really feel like the quality is as good if not better than the BesTop. 1st feature was the center cross bar that gives a much cleaner look when folded back than the BesTops straps around the roll bar on the sides. 2nd was the easy of taking the top on and off fully. The 2 pin connections to the door surround on each side is a huge improvement over the straps that snaked under the speaker boxes. Getting the top completely off and putting it back on both only take just 2-3 minutes once you get the hang of it. (Maybe a little over 5 while still figuring it out.) That is compared to 10-20 minutes and a tools needed. As an added bonus I think it may be easier to get the side and back windows in also. (Now I have only done it a couple of times., but every time I was able to get the back zipped to the sides immediately or after a short drive to stretch out a little. (In comparison I spent several months of winter with the back not totally zipped up with my old top.) Now let me say there is nothing wrong with the BesTop and I 100% loved it with a 5 star rating, but the SkyMaster is not a step down at all, and actually is more user friendly. I feel like you are paying extra for the name if you go with the BesTop.
All the features and the Master Twill layers.! Can't wait for it to arrive!
I love this top, it’s quieter than my older top, fairly easy to install, I bought the top and upper door skins at a great price, Love the sunroof feature, Looks fantastic, highly recommend.
Can't review at this time. Have not received the top, just ordered today.
The top arrives sooner than I expected and it looks great on my Jeep. It did take me a couple of hours to install just because it was real snug but in the end it fit just right.
Great top ! One of the windows was scuffed upon Arival and mastertop sent out a new one ! Very happy with the top and get a lot of compliments with it
This is a great frameless soft top option at an economical price without sacrificing quality. Mastertop Skymaster brought this frameless, "fastback" style top to the market for the TJ sometime in 2020 so I was a little hesitant to purchase based off 1 positive review. Well, now there are two. I didn't want sailcloth and I needed matching twill upper soft half doors and only Mastertop can provide both. Convertible options are just as pictured and flipping the top section back is simple. Installation was a bit difficult & as expected but I had no choice to install in a heated garage during winter months. Others say to install in direct sunlight during summertime... I had an issue with one of the door surrounds and an email to Matertop had a replacement door surround shipped out the same day. Windows are large, fabric is taught and I do not think a center bow will be needed above the driver/passenger opening. It's relatively quiet but not as quiet as a hardtop and I look forward to enjoying the top during summer months.
I purchased a 2001 TJ and restored it into a DD. Other than buying the jeep the purchase of the top was the second biggest expense. I put off buying until this year and struggled on what to get. I really liked the look of the SkyMaster but I was hesitant to buy it due to no reviews and it being new. But, I jumped in with two feet and purchased d the MasterTwill with Door Uppers...Here is my review:
The door uppers and top arrived in two separate boxes with the doors arriving first. (the uppers are still in the box waiting for fall but made an appearance for picture day). The windows are beautiful and clear and the fabric is awesome.
I know with the pandemic, shipping is delayed but I received it in half the time that Qudratec quoted.
The top came almost completely assembled. The window quarters were wrapped around the top and quickly flattened out after sitting in the sun for 30 minutes. I was able to install it myself but having a second set of hands would have been helpful. It took me about 2 hours to install with no prior experience with a frameless top.
In the first part of the instructions you need to drill a pilot hole and screw in a set screw to join the door bow to the mounts. I decided to do this after I already had the top on the jeep to ensure everything was square. Not sure if that was necessary but I figure it's better safe than sorry.
The top fits like a dream and the flip back top is easy to operate. The look of the top on my Jeep was exactly what I wanted. The fabric and windows seem to be of high quality. I purchased the best and expect that I will get many years out of this top.
IMO this top is well worth the cost and would purchase from MasterTop again!
First let me start by saying that this is a high quality top as with all Master Top products. Now that is out of the way, the directions are terrible. The top has obviously gone through a revision but the directions did not. Step1 Fig 8 mentions included self tapping screws in the hdwe pack. There are no such screws included. Step7A Fig. 41-43 mention a "C" channel for each side window. There are no "C" channels except the rear window and it has an upper and lower one. A nice mention would have been to use a heat gun to warm up the plastic ribs that hook under the rear corners of the tub. The sun isn't enough to get them in there because they are so tight. Finally some of the pictures are taken at such a close up POV that you can;t tell what you are actually looking at. The better way would have been to take an overall picture with an arrow pointing to the spot in reference, then show a zoomed in close up of that area at the beginning of that arrow of reference. If the directions had been better written and actually matched the product, I would have given it a 5 STAR review. Bought this top in February and just now got it put on today. It took almost 5 hrs and some blood was involved as I have never owned or installed a soft top before. Please remember people like me when revising or documenting installation instructions. I will amend my review after some time has gone by and i see how well it wears and works in the real world. So far I really like it after I got it installed. Thank You!!! Brian D.
