Reviews for Quadratec Aluminum Modular Engine and Transmission Skid Plate for 18-20 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited with 3.6L engine
Very pleased with this skid plate. Lightweight, but super sturdy, and very well-made.
I ordered the engine skid plate to protect the oil pan, transmission cooler lines, and low exhaust loop. I was concerned about the previous review of losing 2" of clearance. I measured from the stock cross member and then from the new skid plate. Stock was 13 7/8 and new skid is 13 1/8. My lost ground clearance was 3/4". It was easy to install and I'm happy with the protection coverage it offers.
I'm glad I found this skid plate. I looked at a lot of other companies versions but narrowed in on these for mainly weight reasons with being aluminum vs steel and then price. Installation was pretty straight forward and it didn't take a lot of time. The most important part of the install was to keep everything pretty loose until all bolts were attached so that you didn't fight fitment. I feel so much better now that I have this plate installed for when I'm on the trails. I'm not going to suddenly loose my engine oil or transmission fluid from a rogue rock and be left stranded. The only thing I wish was different on this product was if they could have come up with a way to better protect the bolt heads from skid damage so that plate removal won't be hindered in the future.
This is a beefy, yet super light skid. The new crossmember weighs more than the plate. Very solid, can't wait to gouge it up a little! Install was straightforward and easy enough. Installation manual is very high quality and easy to follow. One note, the very first step of instructions says "Remove both crossmembers and transfer case skid plate. You will not be reinstalling them". I did not do that. I left the trans case factory skid there until I get that skid. It's on b/o otherwise if have bought the pair together. Soon enough.
This thing is robust, I ordered before the website updated to make this 4 door only. I took a trip to Quardatec to return and show them the issues with my 2 door. They promptly updated web site and are working and making this comparable with 3.6L 2 door. I did keep and modify my jeep to use this skid. Quadratec customer service and engineering team are top notch. Thanks guys
The skid plates are very good! Would recommend them if this is what you’re looking for. The only problem I’ve had is one of the Allen screws that hold the oil drain cover on seized up. I had to use an easy-out to get the screw out. I reached out to Quadratec and have heard nothing back. Went to the local big box store and got 4 stainless steel screws for $5. Will put anti-seize on them before putting them in.
I purchased back in Nov. 2020 it took about four months to arrive. The concept is great, and the product was easy to install. The big drawback is the system reduces clearance by about 2 inches.
Interesting, yet poorly executed design. While this Aluminum skid plate is very light and comes with a new beefy steel crossmember, the design is not well thought out.
The new cross member is very thick and extends farther down than the factory unit. This along with the recessed bolt holes on the aluminum part of the skid means that this skid plate adds over 2" of unnecessary bulk to the bottom of your jeep. I've been hung up on this skid plate more times than I can count where the factory cross member probably wouldn't have even touched. Other manufacturers have figured out ways to keep their skids much closer to the belly of the jeep. I will be removing this skid plate and switching to another option.
