Some soft shackles simply have a loop to go over the monkey's fist knot. I would feel very unsecure with one of those, even if they aren't as unsecure as they seem to be. (I saw some at the vendor's show at Trail Hero.) The loop tightens up behind the knot and get tighter as the load is increased. I haven't needed to use these, but will not hesitate to do so when I need them. Stretchy ropes or straps (synthetic wich line and snatch straps) are famous for launching bits of metal. I have a scar on my shin from one such event. The broken metal bit that hit me weighed about 1 ounce. A steel shackle weighing a few pounds would have broken my leg, or worse. While I was in the Navy, the executive officer of an aircraft carrier was killed by a nylon mooring line that snapped under load. This is great insurance, and easy to use.
