Reviews for Westin WJ2 Rear Bumper with Tire Carrier for 18-21 Jeep Wrangler JL
Everything about this bumper is spot on! Perfect coating, great features and fit perfect.
Product arrived in great condition, all parts included. Since I'm kind of a "shade tree mechanic ", this was a pretty easy installation. Although the bumper is fairly heavy, my wife was able to help lift it into place. The entire installation took about 2 hours with her help. The one thing I would say is that if you're a novice, the instructions are more of an overview than step by step. I think a better description of the bolt sizes and some of the steps were kind of out of sequence. But overall extremely happy with the construction powder coating and functionality would recommend if they would throw in or tell you you will need an extension cable for your back up camera depending on tire size . We are running 35 inch tires .
I have a 2021 JLUR eco diesel and the backup camera does NOT work with this bumper... be aware that your camera will not attach. Seems that they know this but haven't stated it on their site... other than that - bumper seems sturdy but haven't put any miles on it yet. Stay tuned...
Quality product, well packaged, decent instructions. I have upgraded my JL to 35x12.5 tires on AEV Borah wheels. I picked this bumper/tire carrier because it was adjustable for carry height - I wanted the tire as low as possible to have as good of rear vision as possible and it fits the bill. I also used a Mopar CHMSL relocator to move the light into the wheel, helping even more with rear vision. The only challenge I had was that the carrier didn't extend out far enough for my tire/wheel combination. I was able to resolve this with two Titan 1/4" wheel spacers. With 1/2" of spacing, the lugs appear to still long enough to safely secure the spare and the sidewall barely touches the carrier frame. Also, I put a few small dabs of silicon RTV on the camera mount and spacers to hold them in place when removing the spare.
As Vince W. noted, the camera cable becomes very tight, but I was able to use some creative re-routing inside the tailgate to get enough slack.
The number is nice and easy to install. I got the version with sensor holes.
The tire carrier install instructions were terrible! It took way too long trying to figure out which bolts to use and where the parts are supposed to bolt together.
The backup camera cable needs an extension which is roughly another $40.
The spare tire doesn’t fit very well either. I’m running 35x11.50r17 Nitto Trail Grappler and I expected the spare to sit flat against the carrier but it doesn’t have enough room so it binds.
I purchased this bumper for my 2021 Jeep Wranger Rubicon. I bought it because it had two key features that I wanted: the ability to reuse the back up sensors and the fact that it worked with the OEM hitch. Bottom line, it didn’t do either of these things without significant modification. First, the factory wiring harness for the backup sensors will not work with this bumper. The sensor holes in the Westin bumper are spaced differently than they are in the factory bumper. I had to cut and re-wire part of the harness to make it work. Second, once I installed the bumper, it blocked the trailer plug doors such that they would not open. I ended up having to fabricate a bracket to attach to the Jeep’s frame to lower the trailer plug receptacle about one inch. While the bumper does have a nice finish and is well built, I don’t suggest this product to anyone unless you have some fabrication skills and the right equipment.
