While not as iconic overall as something like the Mona Lisa, or Sistine Chapel, a Jeep’s seven slot front grille nonetheless is about as famous and recognizable as something can be in the automotive world.

It is also a look that has pretty much been unchanged since it first arrived in that seven-slot design right after World War II. Sure, small changes over the CJ and Wrangler years widened and angled the appearance at times, but that seven-slot number always remained the same.

For 2024 though, Jeep has chosen to make that Wrangler grille just a bit slimmer from top to bottom in a bid to increase cooling efficiency as well as for accommodating a new Warn factory-installed winch. It also keeps a body match color around the outer edge of the grille, while the seven slots are now all a black textured finish.

Still, no matter what comes on the Jeep's front end, everyone has their own preference when it comes to their Jeep’s look. And if you are seeking to change the look of your Jeep's front end, then there are definitely a few options.

Aftermarket grille options can be something as innocent as a factory-type replacement, inserts that alter color scheme or pattern between the grille slots, or as ambitious as an entirely new grille shell with integrated lights that dramatically changes the front end design. There are even mesh overlays that cover up those seven slots and offer some customization in the form of, say, a black mesh finish, the American Flag, Star, or a host of other designs.

So what are the differences?

Well, a replacement grille shell is typically an entire new front face that can either match the original factory version, or entirely change it up to a whole new front grille design.

Factory-type replacements are perfect for those who love the classic look and simply want to replace an older, worn out front, or swap out a damaged grille. These have all the same features as the factory set up, including headlight and signal openings (depending on year) and are usually made with the same ABS plastic to keep it lightweight, while still remaining durable.

Aftermarket grille shells can take your Jeep’s front end to a completely different zip code from where the factory style lives. That’s because many aftermarket grilles alter the shape, number and look of the grille openings, can change the appearance of the headlight rings and can even include lighting options integrated into the grille. Think futuristic instead of traditional. Many of these are constructed from injection-molded plastic for durability and have the ability to be painted to match the Wrangler’s body color.

As far as grille inserts, for many they are the quickest and easiest route to go when looking at a front end transformation. They do not require you to change out the full grille at all. Instead, these inserts mainly come with seven individual pieces that snap into place between each grille opening without drilling, or use adhesive to lock into position — all so you do not have to remove the front grille.

Some of these inserts are entirely open in the middle, while others can be slotted, dimpled, or even utilize mesh openings to allow airflow.

Other inserts are a full one-piece design with most using aluminum, mild steel or stainless material that attach behind the grille and use a bracket to tightly fit into place. These can also offer a bit more in customization as there are quite a few designs you can choose to match, perhaps, a Jeep theme you want to project. Or maybe a flag or star for the front.

Individual grille inserts normally are engineered with plastic or metal, and come in a variety of finishes like chrome, gunmetal or black so you can customize that look while still featuring the traditional seven slot look.

Finally, grille overlays are products that sit over the front grille and normally take the place of the front seven slot inserts. This requires a more complex installation, as those slots need to be removed in favor of a larger mesh or wire screen opening.

These grille overlays provide a unique, custom front appearance and can be as simple as a standard black, or fancier shiny stainless. Others feature a studded boarder around the grille for a more intimidating appearance.

Grille overlays can be more durable than their plastic brothers and sisters, especially when off-roading, but cutting out the traditional seven slot appearance can be a drawback for some.

Keep in mind that not all grille products are available for all Jeep models, and many of the aftermarket replacement grilles only fit the newer versions. But whether it is grille inserts, a factory grille replacement, mesh grille overlays, or a full on aftermarket grille replacement, they make for a great modification on your Jeep and are a perfect way to fulfill that Jeep New Year’s customization resolution.
