Competition breeds innovation.

Well, perhaps that is something lurking on the horizon for Jeep as it prepares to fend off Ford’s new Bronco challenge. But at the moment, that spark does seem to have pushed the brand into offering things that enthusiasts have long wanted on a Wrangler.

First, it was a factory Hemi engine option which Jeep just released in its Wrangler 392. The company also recently rolled out its first ever plug-in hybrid Wrangler. Now, it seems some 2022 model year Wranglers will have an available 35-inch factory tire package option as well.

According to MoparInsiders, Jeep is currently planning to offer a 35-inch tire option on its Rubicon trim level vehicles, and the brand has been seen testing this tire size throughout the metro Detroit area over the past few months.

These tires look to be BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2s — just like what Jeep now offers on a standard Rubicon, albeit in a 33-inch version. The tires are also wrapped in a set of Mopar 17-inch Beadlock capable wheels. These are not the same beadlocks that are included on the 392 Wrangler, so it could be an all new tire and wheel package exclusively for Wrangler Rubicon buyers.

Additionally, the test Wrangler displayed a spare-tire mount that appears different than the current Mopar version, so anyone who opts for the larger tire package can avoid tailgate damage from the heavier load.

For those worried about daily driving on larger tires, Wrangler JL owners can comfortable swap to 35-inch tires without encountering issues or having to make other alterations. However, many who enjoy off-road driving usually do add a spacer or suspension system for extra clearance and better performance while trail riding.

Ford is planning to offer a “Sasquatch” package on its new Bronco that will (among other things) arrive straight from the factory with 35-inch tires and beadlock-capable wheels. But unlike Wrangler, Ford’s package will be available on almost all trim levels that do not already come with 35-inch rubber.

Jeep has not officially announced any information on the 2022 Wrangler, so it is unclear if this 35-inch tire option will also be offered on the 4xe and 392 editions. What is clear, though, is Jeep has certainly altered from its more conservative Wrangler approach, and the competitive road forward should be quite interesting.

And innovative.
