JL Wrangler Forums

One of the common threads as more and more spy photos of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL emerge is – hey – the thing still looks like a Wrangler. We know, we know, not very earth shattering, but sometimes when a model undergoes a full-on refresh, looks can change. So we’re glad Jeep did not mess with the exterior design.

However, the JL interior is a different story. A rewritten, revamped story. And luckily it appears to be a good read, at least, based off new spy shots that leaked out Thursday.

These photos, from our friends over at JL Wrangler Forums, display a much clearer interior picture of a production ready Wrangler JL Rubicon edition that has left its cheap hard plastic and outdated components behind for a more modern look.

Among the refinements is a central, colored, dash panel that runs the entire length and includes all vents, gauges and infotainment system on the same level. While this one shows a darker red dash finish, Jeep usually offers different interior options which should have other dash colors like black or charcoal.

Also notable is the removal of ‘Since 1941’ from the grab bar, which now appears slightly larger and more integrated into the dash while the vehicle’s vents, gauges and revamped steering wheel incorporate a silver trim to upgrade their respective look.

Speaking of the steering wheel, which has a heating option in this version, you may notice there is no longer an ignition switch as the JL is moving to a push button start to go along with its proximity keyless entry fob. Owners no longer need a key at all to enter and start the vehicle, as they just need the fob near the door to unlock. The JL steering wheel itself displays a more concave design than previous editions and looks to retain button controls on the stalks for radio and cruise control access.

The vehicle’s UConnect infotainment system is a predominant feature in these photos, and enters its fourth generation for the JL edition - offering touchscreen sizes varying from 5, 7 and 8.4 inches. This system handles tasks like navigation, music and heated seats, while providing information on vehicle settings and climate control. In addition, this version also provides in-depth data for those who off road such as wheel articulation, transfer case temperature, pitch and roll degree and suspension componentry.

Below the infotainment screen are familiar controls for heat and air conditioning and, in these photos, what looks like a dual-zone automatic climate control system - indicating that the vehicle spied here is a higher trim-level. For those not interested in using the touchscreen, the spy shots show Jeep will include power/volume and UConnect control knobs as well. Two other switches, auto start/stop and a parking sensor based off the backup camera, also look like they make their debut for the JL model, according to this photography.

Near those are four centrally-mounted power window switches, similar to the current JK Wrangler design, that indicate the JL will retain its removable door ability. While this is pretty much an expected feature, it is still nice to see visual confirmation. Four auxiliary switches round out the middle section and will provide owners the ability to wire up things like lighting and lockers, and control them right from the dash.

Another nice feature to see is both transmission and transfer case shifters – at least in this version – are remaining in their traditional positions instead of changing over into a rotary or dash-mounted design.

The JL Wrangler is scheduled to enter production in November, and should be on dealership lots by the end of this year.
