Nothing like a little rivalry to get the competitive juices flowing.
On the cusp of Ford’s new Bronco reveal, scheduled for Monday evening, Jeep today released a teaser image showing the front end of either a JL Wrangler or Gladiator displaying a ‘392’ badge on the hood.
Those numbers refer to Chrysler’s 392-cubic inch 6.4-liter V8 HEMI engine that pushes out 485 horsepower and is found in some versions of Dodge Charger and Challenger, as well as the Durango SRT.
The image, posted on Jeep’s Twitter feed, appeared after more pictures of the new Bronco recently made their way around the social landscape. While Jeep did not include any other information in its post, the shot also displays what looks to be a rather large hood scoop as an additional hint about the added power.
HEMI engine swaps have long been popular with Jeep enthusiasts looking for extra horsepower and torque, as well as those who make custom vehicles for trade shows like the Specialty Equipment Market Association event. However, Jeep has never offered a HEMI as a factory option for the Wrangler.
Currently, customers have three powerplant choices when purchasing a Wrangler or Gladiator, with the largest being the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 that offers 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.
Jeep’s teaser post looks like a hint at more to come for the brand in the coming days, and could even involve the release of this year’s concept vehicle crop. Jeep normally rolls out its concept lineup during Easter Jeep Safari week in Moab, Utah, however the company pulled that announcement following EJS’ cancellation back in April.
"The Jeep brand will be active on its social media channels over the next two weeks," Jeep parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said in a statement.
As to whether Jeep is planning some type of direct challenge to the Ford Bronco, an FCA spokesperson said, "We have no further comment."
