The steady, low growl of a powerful diesel engine will soon be something only in Jeep’s rearview mirror past.
Well, at least for those interested in purchasing a Wrangler.
The brand recently announced it is ending production of its diesel-powered Wrangler following the 2023 model year. The torque-heavy powerplant will still remain an option though for Gladiator buyers.
The company said it plans to mark the engine’s end with a limited-series Rubicon-only run dubbed FarOut that includes many familiar features, some exclusive graphics and badging, and will arrive with four other powertrain options besides diesel.
“At Jeep, we are always listening to our customers and driven to improve on our legendary 4×4 capability,” says Jim Morrison, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America. “The Wrangler Rubicon FarOut special edition is our tip of the hat to the EcoDiesel technology on Wrangler.”
Originally introduced for the 2020 model year, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 3.0L EcoDiesel featured a then best-in-lineup 442 lb.-ft. of torque, as well as 260 horsepower. Since that debut, Jeep has introduced two other vehicles that have surpassed that torque mark — the Wrangler Rubicon 392, featuring 470 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque, and the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe which delivers 375 horsepower, 470 lb.-ft of instant torque, 49 MPGe, and 21 miles of all-electric range.
If the FarOut name sounds familiar, that’s because Jeep utilized that moniker for a 2020 Easter Jeep Safari Gladiator overlanding concept vehicle that incorporated the 3.0L EcoDiesel powerplant as a way to show off the brand’s relevance and features to the overlanding community.
The 2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon FarOut edition features third-generation Dana 44 front and rear heavy-duty axles, a 3.73 axle ratio, Rock-Trac two-speed transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio and eight-speed TorqueFlight automatic transmission.
The diesel version’s exterior also comes standard with a blackout ‘Diesel 3.0L’ hood graphic, exclusive ‘3.0 D’ badging, 17-inch aluminum wheels, satin black grille, LED running, head and taillights, and body-colored flares.
Inside displays black leather seats with red accents, all-weather floor liners, heated seats and leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel, as well as remote start capability.
For those who are interested in the FarOut limited edition Wrangler, but don’t want a diesel engine, the vehicle will also have Jeep’s popular 2.0 Turbo powertrain, as well as a 3.6L V-6, 6.4L V-8 in the 392 series and the hybrid 4xe as options.
The 2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon FarOut edition is available for ordering through November 2022, with deliveries beginning in the fourth quarter of 2022.
